Sonar keeps crashing on Save
New problem I've been experiencing. Every time I save or save as my current project, sonar seems to freeze for a second before attempting to save, and gets a little stuck when saving. This usually happens on the first save, then on the second save it will usually just freeze and stop responding. Any ideas why this may be happening? (Sonar 8, Windows Vista) Have had no problems like this previously.

It's now crashing on every/any save, and I have a deadline approaching rather quickly. Help much sought and much appreciated!

This time it did the whole freezing thing, but I waited, and it simply error messaged "Failed to save document". Even sometimes just clicking on the 'save as' can cause it to crash.

I just opened a different project, and that saves fine, no errors or freezing. Using the same old synths and plugins I usually use, so that lessens the chance of it being them... I think some of the audio files I've used are aiff, but audio folder shows them as wav (so obvs Sonar resaved/converted). Can't think of what it is other than Sonar just not liking the project, which is ironic as it's one of my better ones.

I have 82 gb free. But Sonar just gave me a error message about memory. Really don't get whats going on. Have made bigger projects than this.

The last project file is about 3.78MB, other projects I've had are less then this, by greater than half. Something unusual about this project file size?

More likely a windows issue like a problem with the hard drive.

You could have a badspot on the drive. Try renaming the project folder, make a copy of it and try to open/save the new copy.

82 Gigs is your Hard drive not your memory. And that sounds full by today's standards. Audio really likes a nice clean 7200 rpm drive with no fragments and 50% headroom. . Back everything up to a external drive before you do anything else. You should put your computer specs in your signature, it makes it easier to figure stuff out when we know what we are dealing with.

Gear/Spec now listed in my signature! Seeing as I've made most of the musical parts, I may just bounce the clips save in a new file, although I have saved alternate versions of this project (as always) for example, "HouseTrack 1_01" "HouseTrack 1_02" etc maybe it's the project file itself??? Can an individual project file become corrupt, and various versions it is saved as will remain corrupt??? Thanks for the help.

Are you backing up to a second drive? If so those versions would return you to a un corrupted state, That is why we back up to a second drive as we work. Having other saved versions on the same hard drive could mean loosing everything at once.

Mhmm I back my sh!t up pretty regularly, at the end of day or after something pretty decent/worthwile has been created, I'll back up to external drive. But these would be backups of the corrupted file. The file itself is just funky. Project runs fine, no dropouts, no stuttering/clicking etc, I only have 1 instance of session drummer, 2 instances of Massive, and 2 instances of Z3ta+. I've had projects save fine with 4 massives 3 Z3ta+'s etc.

Just sitting down again to work on it, haven't had a chance yet. So what are you suggesting, just renaming the project folder, or the folder that's in, or what? 'cause the folder is in a folder, in a folder, etc. It's in my remix folder, in my beatport folder, then it's the project folder, should I just copy and rename the folder in the same place, or outside of those folders?

Couldn't find where it tellme hard drive name. Also, can anyone tell me why the project file would be nearly 4MB big?!?!?! I've made much bigger projects than this one, I've checked a lot of them, all under 2MB, more like 1.5mb, this one I've done less but is slamming 4MB ?!?!?!

bitflipper, I tried your suggestion, and it gave me a worse crash, first it windows start copying audio files as I saved and then it crashed, then i got Sonar message *"Error. Out of memeroy" or something. Then I got some kind of **Miscrosoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error/message (though I cannot see what it says, the box is blank). *What is this? Why does this happen? **Any clue what/why this is? And again lastly, any idea why the project file is so huge in comparison to usual?!?!?!

I think Dave's instruction are very clear. You are not answering some questions asked. Do you use a back up drive? And as Jonesey is asking how big are your hard drives and are they becoming full. 3 MB is just the CWP icon which would not include any audio. Your audio data SHOULD be in the same folder. If you're only recording MIDI then I can see small file sizes and possibly there are no audio folders?

I said I use a backup drive. My hard drive is 5-600GB and I have 82GB left. In my project folders there are the 'audio' folders too.where the audio is stored. I think currently 'save audio with project' is ticked. This problem I've only had with this track, and made this track using a new template I created, so wondering if that could be a problem?

"My hard drive is 5-600GB and I have 82GB left." Well this could be the problem. I would clean that out as much as possible and de-frag. "And again lastly, any idea why the project file is so huge in comparison to usual?!?!?!" 4 MB is not huge. A 3 minute song on a CD is around 40MB. So unless you are talking 4 GB your files are very small. Mine are all between 300MB and 600 MB. And we are talking the project containment folder for the CWP and audio folder.

I should have been more clear, sorry. Close SONAR and any other open programs. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder above your project folder. Right-click on the folder and select "Copy". Then click in the white space between icons and select "Paste". You'll get a copy of the project folder with a name like "Copy of {Project_Name}". Open SONAR and open the project in the "Copy of ____" folder. One of these things is going to happen: 1. The copy/paste will fail because there is a corrupt file in your project that Windows cannot read. Explorer should tell you the name of the bad file, in which case you should rename it to "Corrupt File Do Not Delete". Don't delete it until you've had a chance to back everything up and run a disk repair. 2. The copy/paste will complete and the newly-copied project will open and save with no errors, in which case you rename the original project "Corrupt Project Do Not Delete" and carry on. After you've backed up and run a disk repair, you can delete it. 3. The copied project will fail to open or save, in which case you've got serious disk corruption, either a corrupt wave file (hopefully, because you can figure out which one it is and delete it), or a corrupt project file. If the latter, you're pretty much screwed unless you want to start a new project and import each file one-by-one.
