Any news from Danzi Land and Cape May?

Just wondering how Danny got by and the condition of his studio at the sea side.

Regards, John

I heard from my niece who lives in Linwood NJ..... about 10 miles west of Atlantic City, across the bay and the marshes.

She said power was on, they had no flooding and very little damage from the wind.....part of a fence needed to be straightened up. No major trees down or other similar issues.

It is amazing how if you are north of the eye, the damage is severe, but literally just a mile or so south of the eye, and there is almost no damage.

A few years back, I was headed to a private beach house a friend let me use for a week. This was about a month after a medium sized hurricane came in on NC. Topsail Beach. The Island entrance road we used brought us in on the northern end of the island and it was 20 miles or so to the house on the southern end. The eye of the storm came in about halfway down the island.
As we drove down we were thinking there was no way this house was undamaged and in condition for us to stay even though my friend had been there to clean up and check it out. We were seeing houses moved off their foundations, roofs in the marsh, rooms open to the outside where walls were torn off, piles of rubble where houses once stood, pilings sticking out of the sand where houses once stood, even rebar reinforced cinder block foundation walls were smashed.
When we got to the place where the eye came ashore, the difference was startling. It was almost like nothing had happened there.  We saw none of the destruction we had seen to the north behind us. Mostly we saw shingles missing on roofs, vinyl siding peeled off, and sand drifts but the damage was minimal compared to just a short distance back.
The house we stayed at had some sand on the deck but no damage.

I never thought about that, Herb, but it makes perfect sense.  Thanks for pointing that out.

    Hi John (and everyone else)

Thanks for asking about me....things are fine here. Looks like a war zone, but thankfully no damage to any of my loved ones, my house or my studios. We actually ran both studios all through the storm until we lost power. I worked here at my main studio and we had a client at the other studio that didn't feel like sitting home worrying, and my engineer wanted to work as well to keep his mind off of everything. I thought for sure we were going to make it through the whole thing. But by 10:30 pm, the winds had shifted. We heard what sounded like a freight train and we lost power.

The Mays Landing studio is surrounded by trees so we prayed that no trees fell on it. The storm came right at both places. I wished it was daylight so I could look up into the eye. I heard that's a pretty awesome sight to see. We were definitely lucky, that's for sure. The only issue I had besides power is my french drain backed up a bit from all the leaves clogging up my top gutter...so I got just a little bit of moisture on one of my floors and some water in my garage. Thank God when the power went out, the rain had stopped. My sump pumps were going strong all through the storm. We got power back the next day by 2:40 pm. We came to find out everyone around here had power except for 14 of us...so they found some faulty equipment that they are supposed to replace this week.

Thanks for thinking of me...much appreciated. :)

    -Danny

Glad you made it though OK Danny.

We had the eye of one of those big hurricanes pass directly over us here but.... by the time it got here, the eye had filled in with clouds and the winds had dropped considerably.

The night time storms are the worst..... talk about things that go bump in the night huh?

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it. Me and my dad were talking today about how lucky we were. Then you look at all the poor people that got truly hammered in this and then look at how the storm literally passed over both my house and my studios and we were in perfect shape. I know living near water contributes to some of the carnage we all saw...but we were still really lucky.

This is the path of the hurricane after it passed directly over my house and my main studio both in the same town:

This is how close it passed to the Mays Landing studio:

I just actually went to the ML studio tonight. We're surrounded by trees there and they were scattered all over the place. Broken trees leaning up against each other, branches and leaves all over the place...debris still everywhere.

Scary stuff that I hope I don't see again in this lifetime. I can't fathom a true cat 1 let alone a cat 2. Post tropical cyclone was enough for me! Thanks again everyone. Glad to still be here. :)

Great to hear all is well Danny!!!

We had the most severe weather ever witnessed here on the Great Lakes from it as well, but no destruction other than Snow Storms, Rain and wind with some power outages.

I try and get some pics of the waves posted
