Piano Solo of Be Lifted High

This is a song written by Leeland Mooring that I recorded a piano rendition of using Sampletekk Old Lady, various strings and vocals are Dimension pro and a Korg M-1.

Crits welcome. Thanks for listening. Hope you enjoy it!

Sounds nice Star, pretty song. I would give that piano some more ballz. I can hear the highs and mids well, but as Sir Mixalot said? I like big? Well you know how it goes.

Thanks for listening The Band19. I think maybe its time I looked into Ivory 2. It is amazing how much the mix changes when I disengage ARC.

The thing with some sampled pianos seems to be an unrealistic low end.I rolled off the bottom end on this because it seemed too much. The lower keys seem less realistic than the higher keys.

     Thanks for your comments.

Star, this is an uplifting piece that must have been difficult to play.  I noted with interest that you used an M1.  I have my M1 sitting in the corner of my basement with a dead battery.  I sure miss it.  I got a lot of mileage from mine, and I'm happy that you are still using yours.  Keep up the good work!

    All the best,

Very nice arrangement... I like the strings and voices blended with the piano...
I'm hearing a few timing issues here & there, but overall, this is fine and uplifting music... Well done...

I love the mix, but like was said earlier, I'd love to hear some bass on the piano. I love the arrangement though.

I like the way you play.  I would just say that when the song started (I'm on phones, good ones) that it seemed very high end.  I agree that you could do something to add some lower freqs.  Beautiful tune.  Overall it sounds really nice.  It sounds like a live performance complete with a couple stumbles.  I know because I am stumble king!  The instruments all fit well.  I just noticed your avatar (after all this time).  I'm assuming your chute opened.  LOL!

Very nice.  The one thing I would change is the abrupt ending.  If possible, you should let the last chord end and the reverb decay naturally.

I like your playing. It sounds like a hard song to play. I agree with everyone that their needs to be more low end on the piano. It seems to compete more with the strings because of a lack of low end.

Instead of rolling off the low end piano have you tried using a multiband compressor on the piano? seems like the higher range is boosted a little too much. Just a hair which seems to amplify the lack of low end.
The arrangement is good. I listened to it through my bose surround sound and if their is a lack of low end on those speakers then the low end should be brought out more.

I have a M1 as well, and its showing its age. The piano (and most other samples) seem to be out of a time long past. I find myself using it less and less. As Robby pointed out, the piano sample you used from Sampletek seems to be sterile and lacking both warmth and energy. If you have a couple hundred bucks you can spare.. I suggest the M-Audio Prokeys 88 e-piano... it has a wonderful Yamaha grand that is huge and rich. Makes the Steinway samples I have heard seem kinda toy like.

hey, Tim, beautiful playing!  you play with emotion and draw the listener in and capture the heart of those with your excellent skill.

    some crits on the mix/recording:
piano sounds too heavy on the high end.  try a better sample.
the tail was cut off at the very end, the piano/verb is still ringing, don't cut the project too short.
you're going to think I'm hearing things or at least picking on you, but again I'm hearing distortion occassionally.  not nearly as much as the last song I said that about of yours, but still there.  I think there's something in your process of mixing that you're missing and allowing the sample to distort.

I know some sampled sounds don't like high velocities.  for example, my first "real" sampled piano was Gigastudio's Gigapiano.  When I first started using it, all of my velocites were in the range of something like 40 to 127.  But Gigapiano would distort on anything over 85, so I had to scale the velocities down using the MIDI tools in Sonar.  once I capped the upper limit of the velocities at 85, the piano sounded rich and beautiful.

that MIGHT not be the case here, but it's something to look into because it does seem to be a velocity related issue to my ears.

good work, my friend!  keep it up!
