External Insert?
Anyone get this working in X2? For the life of me I cannot make it happen... Lynx Aurora, I can get signal to go out, but when I "enable" external insert the track goes silent...I searched the forum and apparently no one else uses outboard gear around here to mix with...no one has posted about this since last year. I have eliminated ALL input/outputs EXCEPT the ones I want to use for this and it still fails to deliver... ANYONE getting it to work?
I'm using SOnar Platinium on a 6 core Lynx Audio machine and a ton of vintage pre-amps/eq's/comps I build for fun and sometimes money, REDD.47/API/Neve I also use the UAD stuff, and also use a Macbook Logic 9 through Apogee...

Hi Psychobillybob, Yep, I use EI with a Lynx Aurora 16/Lynx AES16e all the time. What happens when you try to ping for latency from the EI UI? Are you seeing signal at your outboard gear? Dean

No...and just to test it out I've changed from my Aurora to my Edirol FA66 (for simplicity, friggin Lynx GUI is a nightmare)...are you using ASIO or WDM?

I'm using ASIO. The Lynx routing app GUI is pretty dense, but it's really flexible once you get used to it. Dean

Ok in WDM I finally got signal (using the edirol)...but I never see a return latency "number"...(in the offset box) is this a manual number or is it supposed to tell you what the offset is? Seems like in Sonar 8 I got a reading in that box...this is the first time I've tried it with X2 (never did try inX1)... I have a REAL 1176 (one of the Mohog units )/LA2A some great EQ's...I normally don't mix my own stuff but there are some things I want to do outboard-wise and any help is appreciated... Someone needs to tell Lynx to make a GUI thats not some Windows 3.1 leftover...

Hi PBB, The latency number is generated when you do a latency measurement. Here's how it works for me: I hook a piece of outboard up to a set of outputs and inputs on my Aurora, say out 3/4 and in 3/4. Then insert EI in an fx bin and choose those outputs and inputs from the dropdown boxes. Once that's done I click in the EI box to have it measure round trip latency...I think it's in the center of the box near the numeric display. It'll send a "ping" to the hardware and measure the transit time. If that works successfully you'll see a non-zero number appear there. Once that's showing you should be good to go. A couple caveats - 1. If you change latency you'll need to re-test the round trip latency 2. If you put an EI on a bus the latency check won't work unless a track is routed to that bus. 3. EI ins and outs are always paired, so even if you only choose input 3 and output 3 in the dropdown boxes, input 4 and output 4 will be unavailable from that point forward because (for some reason) Sonar assumes that you're always working with pairs. Thanks Dean, very helpful info I'll let you know when I get it to work...so far, I have never gotten a *number in the "Delay Offset" box...the "ping" goes out and a few seconds later the delay box goes back to "white" (it dulls out as the ping is going) but I have yet to see ANY activity on the return box and there is never a number in the delay comp box... I remember why I like tape...

And I have "disabled" the outboard affects, to get the ping to be accurate...you would think with just 4 ins/outs in the Edirol it would be easy...but alas nothing really ever is...

Hm...yeah, that's strange. As long as you make sure that you have the correct inputs in the input box and outputs in the output box it should work OK. Just to make sure, the I/O select on the left should be the output (the "send") and the box on the right should be the input (the "return"). IIRC they don't work inside FX chains, so if that's where you're using them that may be the problem. Incidentally, you probably don't need to bypass the effect unless it's an effect that works in the time domain (delay or some such). I do ping checks on all my comps and such with them engaged all the time. Dean

Okay I have dumbed the system down in order to isolate what is going on...my initial discovery is I have yet on any device (Lynx, Cakewalks own UA-4X, Edirol-FA-66) in any kind of driver mode been able to see a response on the "return" portion of this software... I can see the meter move on the "send" side, I can see the light flash on the "offset" box but I have never yet been able to get the return to register anything... I have cranked the levels (on external insert as well as in my outboard) until they redline...but so far the return side is, "deceased, it is no more, it has shuffled off its mortal coil, it is dead" (to Quote Python)

Hm...does the Lynx/Edirol/Whatever software or hardware meters move on the input the device is connected to? That is, does the soundcard "see" signal coming in from the device and it's just Sonar that doesn't? Dean

I also have a Lynx Aurora, I haven't tried external inserts since I haven't used X2 extensively yet, but it's on my list of things to try soon. I'll report back on how it goes when I get a chance to try it.

Hey Dean, just a quick update: I did get it to work finally with the FA-66 by simplifying my in/out options, but so far I cannot get the Lynx to cooperate. I believe it is a "Lynx Mixer" or "Remote" setting issue... I can never seem to get it routed to work... Do you use the Aurora Remote GUI thing? If you have time maybe you can tell me how yours is set up... I have tried not using it, uninstalling and re-installing stuff...and considered just using some of my out board digital stuff and staying in the digital domain but that completely waste the point of having some of this gear. I guess I need to get over my commitment fears and just track it the way I want it and be done. You have been helpful so far (I'll keep you in the loop on Brandons stuff, he might have demo units available that you could try out or get a discount on, let me know if you are interested)... Thanks.

Hey Pbb, I'll have a look at my Lynx mixer when I get to the studio later today. Oh, and please do let me know if there are some demo Mohogs that are available, it would be much appreciated. More info later... Dean

Hi PBB, So after looking at my Lynx mixer, it really shouldn't take too much setup in here to get EI's to work. Here's a bit of a step-by-step: Add the EI plug to the fx window and choose ins and outs. Here's how mine looks when configured for a 2-1176. In the send and return dropdowns you'll see the friendly names, but those correspond to input 3/4 and output 3/4. Now in the Lynx mixer in the Record/Play window you should see channels light up in green when in use by ASIO. So when you use an output pair as the send for an EI it should light up in green like this: Once signal starts going to an output pair you should see the meters bounce in the output window: (the kind of confusing thing here is that in the output window they number in pairs but in the Record/Play window they don't, so in the Record/Play window you'll see output 3/4 and in the Output window you'll see Digital out 2L and 2R. Once that's been verified I'd make sure that my outboard gear was getting signal by looking at the meters. So on an 1176 switch the metering to show the output signal and make sure that signal is traversing the unit. Next check your Lynx control panel to see if signal is arriving. Back in the Record/Play window look for the meters to bounce on the appropriate input pair: If you're seeing signal on the input pair that means that the Aurora is seeing it and, assuming that you have the correct input pair specified in the EI plug, you should see signal into Sonar.
