Having to tweak settings in Sonar VS. it just working in other programs
I love Sonar. It is a very powerful program and the best sequencer I've ever used. But with that said, why does Sonar take so much preferences settings to get working out of a fresh install.
Here are the things I have to remember to set:
Snap settings in multiple places (I rarely snap to anything less then 1/4 note with my work style)
Midi buffer setting (256 is obviously way too low and causes a lot of people midi drop outs)
Hard drive read and write cache/playback, record buffer size (this sometimes helps drop outs I get)
Turning on 64 bit engine in multiple places
Audio interface latency settings (ASIO control panel)
Metronome 2 bar count down to record (2 bars should be the default, anyone that can record with less is obviously a robot... or ex drummer)
Now, I've overcome having to set many of these by making a template that I always use to start each track, the rest are program wide settings that take a week or so to get set right. Why is it these other programs just work after install:
Acid
Reason
FL studio
And most of them only have an ASIO panel setting. No snap issues, no drop outs, no dropped midi. Cakewalk has always had a lot of these issues. Most importantly, it always has had snap and loop sync issues. Which is by far the worst issue since it introduces hidden ms off clips into your project that requires you to zoom into each clip start and make sure it truly is on the measure. I remember having to do this back in Cakewalk 8 days in the 90's, and it's still happening!
Again, Sonar is still worth it despite these issues, but why oh why can't they hire the old sonic foundry acid (Sony Acid) engineers and have them fix their sync engine?
