Jeff Beck 'cause we ended as lovers' speaks to me.
Here's one with him and Tal Wilkenfeld on bass.

That's the exact song I thought of and went searching the yube for it. We may have even been watching it at the same time.
Decided it wasn't a "solo".
Loved it anyway.

I need to mention Tommy Bolin. Filling Ritchie Blackmore's shoes is must have been one of the most ingrate position in the business, but his work on Come Taste the Band is brilliant - and tasteful. By comparison w/ his previous work and the stuff he did w/ Billy Cobham, he stepped back a little and underplayed, but every single note he plays is essential.

Admittedly I'm biased, but one of my favourite solos of all time is Grant's monster lead work in THIS

Tasteful for sure, and simply perfect in the context of the song

Hi,

A couple of them ... not sure if you all have heard these ... but here goes.

Michael Karoli - CAN - Mother Sky (the whole thing is a guitar solo rip!)

John Weinzierl - AMON DUUL 2 - Yeti (Unbelievable guitar work from start to finish and it was an improvisation!)

Mr. Gurley - Balls and Chain - Along with Janis Joplin, in what likely was the song that taught everyone else to rip it loud and baddddddd!!! (from the Cheap Thrills album)

Funkadelics - Maggot Brain. Needs no words or explanations. Later there were a couple of versions that had 2 guitars that were also magnificent.

Gong - YOU - Master Builder and a Sprinkling of Flowers. Duets between Steve Hillage and Daevid Allen are fabulous.

Garry Moore - first solo album. SPIRIT. Most insane and crazy rock'n'roll solo EVER ... Strummy won't even talk about it! Probably jealous!

David Allen (not the same) - CARMEN - The Gypsies. The guitar solo is laden with Spanish guitar riffs for an awesome combination.

Djam Karet ... if I can figure out which Gayle Ebbett solo I like better, I will let you know. It would be in "Suspension and Replacement" or "Burning the Hard City".

Frank Zappa - His best solos are NOT on record ... they are still buried. He used to warm up with the guitar non-stop and it might go through 3 or 4 songs together, which would create a different tapestry of sound ... those "collages" have never been released and are much more profound musically than a lot of his material too much of which had to satisfy the thirst of a rock-idol audience.

Terje Rypdal - Any of the cuts from EOS, other than the first one (you've been warned!) are incredible. The ultimate chamber music for an electric guitar and bass that no one has the desire to hear. Jeff Beck and many other guitarists stole this atmospheric style 20 years later ... makes Jeff a genius, but Terje? ... an **** because Moshpit mentions it to the Coffee House!

Thanks for the Terje Rypdal tip off!

His style was so out there and like so many other musicians in Europe he also did some jazz with it.

I first heard him with an album called "Odyssey", and he did a couple of shows with Ash Ra Tempel in London ... and I kept thinking ... you don't do that unless you are spacy, atmospheric and out there! ... yep ... even though some of that album was slightly jazz'y, there were some really neat things. A couple of years later he matched up with American Bass Player David Darling, and their album "EOS" is out of this world.

Some of it was used as the soundtrack for Xavier Koller's Oscar winning film "Journey of Hope" about the Kurds in Europe. This film also used music by Jan Garbarek, from "Eventyr".

It was kind of weird when I'm putting on "Amused to Death some years ago, only to find that Jeff Beck was going what Terje had already done years before. In so many ways, this reminds me of Daevid Allen or Steve Hillage's use of the glissando ... it comes off like a keyboard ... wait ... it's not a keyboard ... but it adds something else to the music that makes it different.

Jeff Beck is good, very good in my book, and I've always enjoyed a lot of things he has done ... and I'm glad to see him get out of the pop music mold and do different things and trying the Turandot piece is interesting ... but still not better than Renata Tebaldi!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!
