My mic stands[x1] is always fully booked, with my signature XM1800S,and for mic'ing my Quad[4x12],I found a perfect "paint can" thats tall/wide enough, that the 2nd[of 3 of course] XM,just rests, nicely "off axis",you may percieve that I'am joking, but alas am not,and I wouldn't have it any other way ATM.
Bob

P.S.

Oh,put them away?....NEVER,though the first Gibson I've owned, after 27 years of playing my ancient Ibanez Freakenstein,is ALWAYS put in it's snuggly white fur-lined hard case....especially,after I dinged the heck out of it,not realising "Nitrocelulose",sure aint like the resin-undentable coating on the Epiphone LP Custom,it's a beautifully made/sounding instrument, but FRAGILE,I feel like Gibson should have given a "Lefty" who's rarely laid eyes on a real L/H Les Paul, let alone, actually "owning" one,a Warning sticker!

Then there's the story about seeing a roadie,while I was on tour,spraying "Glen-20" onto all the SM58 vocal mics,just prior to soundcheck......yech.

I cover everything with towels/material that has a pattern on one side.

Mixer, monitors, keyboards, tape decks, guitars,....

I usually move stands (mics, guitars) to the edges of the room to avoid collisions.

I use large socks to cover the mics when not in use.

Plastic covers can retain moisture, nicht gut.

The dust that settles here in New York is atrocious...any large city in fact. I run an air cleaner all the time, it's a pretty kick-ass one (IQ Air) and has 3 stages of filtration in it. I add an extra coarse dust pad to the bottom of the chain, and it's incredible what that picks up in the space of a week. I cannot help but think that if it wasn't stuck to this pad, it would be in my lungs, in my computer, in my mic and everything else.

You know you are a true New Yorker when you blow your nose and the snot is black.

You don't ride the subways, I guess?
You would think that, but surprisingly enough my snot sparkles. Same goes for my fingernails.

Yes, plastic covers can retain moisture - but socks, pillow cases and towels have lint that is released into the air around them (inside and out).

so pick your poison and deal with it!

Just a thought, how long are your recording sessions? And how muche dust your mics pick up?
However i've made custom velvet covers for mine, and when they are not in use they go back to the boxes where they rest tight and snug by the way i talk to them too, like thanking them for their hard work.

Lint is not as small or floatable as the dust that is everywhere.

And the cloth will attract and trap the dust.  Not so with plastic.

And lint is related to types of fabric. And is mostly generated by movement of the material which can break the fibers.

I continue to evaluate how much lint is captured by the dryer which is most likely the cause of breaking the fibers.

I prefer less dust (mostly skin cells), which is much smaller than lint, on the equipment.

I also think any mic that has been used for vocals should be allowed to dry for a while before being placed in closed containers.

Pop screens are supposed to help this. But???

Would be good to know of any science research about this and longevity of equipment.

I agree with that - I tend to leave mine open on the stand for an hour or two before covering them IF I leave them on the stand.

Covering them with cloth is not bad, it will help absorb any extra moisture.

Putting them in a box too soon may retain the moisture on the mics bits.

I surmise the relative humidity is also a factor.

Or maybe none of this matters.

I leave mine out of the cases, on stands, covered when not in use.

And wash the covers weekly.

Re:Does anyone leave the mics in the stands at night? 2012/11/09 16:33:08 (permalink)
My friend the Bass player has 3 Shure SM 57's he bought when he started out back in the 70's. Around 1998 when I had my music store He brought them by and asked me to take them apart and clean the small windscreens. They mostly were smoke stained but not clogged up like you think they would be after over 20 years.  So after I cleaned them, out of curiosity, I plugged them in to the studio system and  A-B'd them with some brand new 57's.
There was no difference at all.
These mikes look liked hell and the small screens were dented.
He still has them and they still sound great.
Because I leave the foam windsocks on all my 57's and 58's they are well protected. I bought these smaller sized ones that fit the 57's and those are secured with black tape so they can't come off.
The windsocks also protect them a bit more when they are dropped.
If a singer hates a windsock, then I let them remove it but they are told to put it back when finished.
I have a open top foam storage bin and they are all pointing straight up in there. At our rehearsal space they live in the stands for months on end.

I have one AKG condensor mike that is also always on the stand ready to use in the studio. It has a foam wind sock too.
Don't worry about dust.
There is a thin layer of foam inside most mikes that you can remove , clean or replace.

 God, that's funny!

I love this forum. I recently bought an SM57 and was thinking about everything mentioned here every time I looked at it sitting in it's stand.  Unfortunately, I'm anal AND lazy at the same time. I feel bad that it's sitting out, but can't bring myself to do anything about it... wait a minute...

OK, I just put it in it's fine leather case.

I feel better.

I never use more than 2 mics in a given session and it only takes a minute or so to put them both back in their cases.  I also keep my mic/guitar cables rolled up and stored away in a plastic bin when not in use, and every hardware item (e.g., synths, Maschine, controllers) has a dedicated and custom-fitted dust cover.  But, then again, I'm sorta a neat-freak.

I never thought I'd get so many opinions. I can say I never have retired a mic so it probably doesn't matter much. While I spend a certain amount of time setting up and breaking down, I don't much mind throwing it in the car since I'm always packed and ready.
