Can only record 1 midi track

Hi guys, I'm on my first day with Sonar X2 Studio and finding the learning curve quite steep. I've managed to record a midi track with either an instrument or a midi keyboard as the output but I can't work out how to get another track to record. I've created a midi or instrument track and made the input device my Akai MPK Mini controller keyboard and the output as Master for an instrument or Quad Capture (My interface) for my Motif XF6 but I can't play the target from my keyboard or get the get it to record any notes. I'm assigning a midi channel to my input set-up but when I change the channel number for a new track there is just silence. I'm sure there's a completely obvious answer to what I'm doing wrong but I've been going crazy trying to work it out. I would be so grateful if somebody could give me some advice.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, I look forward to some positive feed back.

turn on input echo and arm record. make sure the new tracks channel is set to your keyboard's output channel.

Probably the first thing you need to know is that MIDI Channels and Tracks are not the same thing and have no connection.
Your MIDI device (Keyboard) can be set to output to any MIDI channel - and probably defaults to 1.
Your MIDI track in Sonar can take MIDI input from Channels 1-16 - but for most solo studios, you can set it to Omni - so it takes all incoming MIDI regardless of its Output channel.

The other side of this is that if you want Sonar to play sounds on your keyboard - then it must send to the keyboard's synth - either through USB or MIDI. I prefer to always use MIDI, as it typically has drivers especially for midi/audio. Others may disagree!
You must make two way midi connection to your keyboard, and it's input must be set to the same MIDI channel that Sonar is sending the data out on.

(Goodness softsynths are so much easier!  :  )

To hear it in Sonar - you must send your keyboard's audio outs into an audio track in Sonar NOT A MIDI TRACK!  EMPHASIS!!!

Thanks Brian and Swamp, I think I've solved the problem of recording instruments. I had the output as "Master" but since my earphones are plugged into my interface I should have had out put as "Quad-Capture" and when I tried that I was able to hear all the instrument tracks and record them successfully. One thing I have been noticing about the internal synths is that sometimes when I try and record them I get a pop up saying "Audio device not recognised......" so I click OK then try again and it works, I have a 64bit computer and am running the 64bit version of Studio so I'm wondering if that could have something to do with it.
Anyway, many thanks for taking the time to answer, I just hope that some day I may be able to do the same for future newbies, you've no idea how reassuring it is having helpful experts on tap.

I've also had another go at midi, I'm inputting notes from a controller keyboard and when the input is set to "omni" it records to track 1 but when I try to specify a midi channel on the controller keyboard it won't record anything. I recorded a short phrase and manually altered the midi channel numbers in the event editor and it did play the instrument set to channel 2 of my Motif set up but I can't get the keyboard to record in any other midi channel than 1.

For those of you with the patience and fortitude to have read this far I have cracked the midi code. I uploaded a 16 midi channel project and as I checked each channel it played the instrument allocated to the equivalent track on my Motif song set-up so it seems the best thing I assume that if I load the midi channel project first I can add instrument and audio tracks as I need them.
Thanks again for your help guys, I do appreciate your input.

hey neil.... your midi controller will have what's called an omni channel, which usually defaults to channel 1.
when you record midi on any tracks, make sure to leave them set to omni or 1 or whatever channel your midi controller is set to.  omni does not mean that your midi controller is broadcasting on all 16 channels.
as far as your outputs go, master should be the default output bus for all your audio tracks until you start to learn about advanced bus routing.  what you need to do, though, is select the master bus and ensure that the output of that bus is going to your quad capture.
so, leave your keyboard controller on channel 1. when you insert a new midi track make sure the input channel is 1 or omni and keep these channels the SAME with every new midi track you add.
