Sound Curtains: HOLY SHLAMOLI!!

I was just poking around ebay and decided to do a search for sound curtains because I want to create a sound barrier across the entrance to what going to be my new studio. OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive...

http://www.ebay.ca/sch/i....osacat=0&_from=R40

I used to work in a film studio and I knew the film blacks were expensive but I had know idea they cost THAT much. So much for going for pro material... lol.

Found a significantly cheaper one. I guess the difference is "Belgium" velvet. Man... that's craziness. :-/

why would one use curtains instead of a door?  it seems to me that a good solid wood door with a tight seal would do a better job.

It's a wide entrance into the living room in an apartment. It would have to be two oddly shaped doors even if they allowed me to do the reno... which would cost even more. I just want something to deaden the sound between the living room and the front door which leads into the hallway. I'm also thinking I'd like a few extra to create a ghetto vocal booth.

You could try some "black-out" curtains.  They might not get rid of it completely, but they can cut down on the noise enough to record.  I got some because I was working nights.  I have a dual set-up.  I bought hardware that supports two sets of curtains.  It works pretty well.  Yes, they even have some of these type of curtains at Ikea.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys?

Find ya a nice heavy area rug and some of those clips that pinch and lock with a nice heavy curtain rod.  Not sure how it would work but its a thought

One problem with a rug though is it's much stiffer so I wouldn't be able to pull it aside to get through the door very easily. I do want to hang a carpet on the wall that faces opposite where my speakers are gonna be to reduce any noise going into the neighbors place. However this is a properly built building with good solid firewalls so I think (hope) it's gonna be plenty soundproof as it is. My main concern is the front door and the windows. I don't crank things up much anymore anyway but I get alittle self conscious when working on my vocals and due to the repetitive nature of tracking I don't want to drive my neighbors nuts.

Also some of my lyrics can be pretty salty and screechy so I don't want to scare the old people I'll be surrounded by any more than necessary. ;-)

I also have a roll of rubber underpadding for laminate flooring but again that stuff is pretty stiff and it's not very pretty.

    Hi,

That is extremelly thick velvet, and the same that I used for my cape.

You can buy that material (and make your own drapes!!!!) at any theatrical supply material stores, and there are some in Hollywood that carry the material. If you have a business license you can get these wholesale ... !!!

The difference? ... usually it is 48 inches wide, instead of the lesser width that you can find in most stores. It is cheaper all around.

You do want to loop these a bit and make one of those waveform like things to help catch the sound, and you want as few seams as possible, to help the material be stronger and last longer.

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!
