Is there a way to make track templates?

I have a track from one project that contains the perfect settings, effects, prochannel settings etc, and I want to be able to use the same kind of track on a different project. What's the best way to do this? Is there a way to save a track as a template?

I would rather not have to save a prochannel present and an fx chain separately and import them seperately onto the new track...

I don't know how I did not see this before... FBB wins again!

The great thing with track templates is they recall just about everything, effects, synths routings, associated busses, etc.

In fact you can use a dummy track routed to various downstream busses to create buss templates, complete with all effects, sends, etc.

I use them all the time. Create a blank track with the buss routing you want as either sends or an output and then save as template. To insert the busses insert the track template and then delete the dummy track leaving just the busses behind.

Wait, let me get this straight... If you save a track template for a track that is connected to a bus... Importing that track template will ALSO import the bus that its connected to? If that's true, this is an awesome trick. I've always been bummed about how there is no way to clone a bus (unless I'm wrong again?) but this would be a good alternative.

While we're on the topic... Is there a way to save a bus template? To save a bus's prochannel setting, fx bin, outputs, etc? Although I doubt it, hey, I learn something new every day...

Yes, any buss associated with the track in any way will be created, and any downstream busses including sends.

Say you have this set up

Guitar track with sends to a chorus buss and a delay buss and that track outputs to a guitar buss. That in turn has a reverb send on it and outputs to a frontline buss that outputs to your master buss.

Save the guitar track as a template.

Then when you insert that template unless they already exist the following will be created

Guitar track with all fx and settings
Delay buss with fx and settings
Chorus buss with Fx and settings
Reverb buss with Fx and settings
Guitar buss with Fx and settings
Frontline buss with Fx and settings
Master buss with Fx and settings

If any of those already exist new ones won't be created, the existing ones will be used instead even if they have different settings or routings.

It really is a neat trick until buss templates are included, if ever. It's not a big issue, how long does it take to delete a track?

You're right, it's not hard at all to delete tracks. Plus there's a good chance you may need the tracks anyways in many situations.

Heres a question... You said that if the bus already exists, it won't create another one. Well how does sonar determine if it already exists? Does it just look to see if there is already a bus with the same name?

If I recall correctly, it is by name. There is an easy way to test it.

And for your next test - is the spelling of said bus case sensitive?

10 bonus points for the correct answer.

The ability to select which busses are imported was a previous feature in 8.5 that I wish they'd bring back to X1-X2.

If I were guessing, it would be case sensitive. I have not tested it because the naming convention that I use would never have an issue with track or bus names.

Sorry guys. I realize that I could've tested the name thing myself, but I'm at work right now. I'll definitely test it out when I get home, although I think the answer has already been mentioned...

How do you insert the template into a new project?

Right click in the track header and select it from there "Insert from track template..." IIRC.
