Problem using USB headphones with X1 and X2
I hope this is not a crazy question! Can I use my USB headphones to listen while I am playing or playing back recorded material in Sonar X1 or X2? In the sound category of the control panel, I have indicated that the headphones are the default playback device. If I open a file such as a downloaded video with sound the sound plays back through the headphones. However, when I try to use them for sound when working in Sonar, the sound still comes out of my monitors instead of the headphones (even though I have not changed it in the control panel). I have checked everywhere that I can think of and I have not found a solution. Any help will be really appreciated since I need to "not make much noise" some times and would like to listen through the headphones. Regards, Tom

I don't think that it's a crazy question. I just don't know if it can work or not. In fact, I never even knew that they made USB headphones. Most computers nowadays have an 1/8" stereo headphone jack, often on the front panel of desktop computers. Even if they did work, latency might be a problem, latency being the time it takes for the computer to process the sound and get it back to the headphones. I would probably suggest just picking up a pair of inexpensive headphones at BestBuy or go online and grab a pair from MusiciansFriend.com: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/headphones?_requestid=454002#fT=&gP=1&pS=20&v=g&sB=pLH&lP=c&catId=site1YD Good luck!

If you are using an audio interface, then of course a 1/4" headphone jack is typically located on it. This would be the preferred method.

digimidi, Thanks for your replies and information. I have checked my audio card (M-Audio 1010LT) and it does not have an output for headphones. The USB headphones that I have are not high quality for actual music production but are for use primarily with non-music computer programs. They are Logitech and have a microphone so they can be used to record the operator's voice when for example recording a tutorial using a computer program. I do have a pair of AKG headphones that are attached to my Kurzweil keyboard but they don't play the sounds generated in Sonar. I will continue to search to see if it is possible to use the USB ones, and if I can't use them, then it will not be the "end of the world." Regards, Tom

Looks like you will need to monitor through a mixer, or get an RCA to stereo adapter of some sort to get the best results. Brian

basically your soundcard and the usb headphones are conflicting there. they are both going to be seen by windows as soundcards. if you choose asio to run the 1010 then the headphones are not going to be selected. definitely get an rca to stereo adapter.

Regards, Tom This may not help or work but if your usb headphone microphone is considered an audio device, in sonar check under edit/preferences/audio/devices and make sure your usb headphone is shown there and checked instead of the M-Audio 1010LT. While using the headphone microphone as an audio device (this is asumming it is possible) you will not be able to use the M-Audio 1010LT. When you want to use the M-Audio 1010LT you will have to reverse the process.

USB headphones? Freaky. Yeah they'd probably be considered a separate audio device. Wouldn't he be able to use the Delta and another device if he switched his driver setting in Sonar to WMD? or does that particular interface only work with ASIO? That said... I find it odd there's no headphone jack on the interface but having a small mixer take the output from the Delta then plug some regular headphones and your monitors into that would probably be the best way to go. You'd want something that's not going to color the sound too much though. They have little headphone/monitor mixers specifically for that type of thing. I think the Mackie Big Knob would do it but Berhinger makes a cheaper version and then there are other devices that are even simpler and cheaper. Cheers. ...USB headphones... really?

beep, usb devices e.g. soundcards or headphones are classed as an audio device (will generate an entry in device manager) .. you could use WDM if thats what you mean..but it's just easier to route the 1010 to a heaphone out , which you can do / it's an option on the control panel next to the clock, buttom right of the screeen.. is with the 1010LT anyway to the OP, just send one outputs to output "main" and use that as your headphone and you can control that within sonar volume wise also. http://www.computercablei...-Female-Cwholesale.jpg should do the trick , just put it on 1 pair of the phono outs, plug ya headphones into that or an extension .. hopefully it has enough power to do that. how mine was setup , I have a pair of logitech speakers with a sub for testing... that has a headphone socket on that, which I use sometimes.

Ah yes... WDM. Apologies. Never used that yet but yeah... probably way better to just use regular headphones. I could see why someone might use a USB mic for stuff like podcasts or whatever if you don't have an interface but headphones? Just plug those buggers into the headphone jack. Whatevs... maybe I'm getting old. Now if you'll excuse me I must tend to my lawn. harumph...
