Video card messing with Plugin GUI?

Hey gang!

I have noticed some peculiar issues which I have determined is something faulty about my setup. Perhaps...

First of all, X2 with the quick fix is performing ridiculously well on my main DAW - specs in sig. But I have noticed with TH2 (full version) and Mark Studio from Overloud that Sonar sometimes crashes when trying to open the GUI. And this happens when trying to insert the plugs as well as when I want to tweak them.

Now, here's the weird part. If I insert a Pro Channel preset including these plugs, it's fine. Audio plays back through them and everything is fine until I try to open up the plugin that's already in an FX Chain module. It will crash. Or it won't. There's no consistency either, in any project where I have experienced this. To me, it seems like it only happens when opening the GUI and that is what actually causes the crash. The last couple of days I have noticed that this can happen with some waves plugs I have as well. But all my stuff from NI, Rob Papen, Spectrasonics, other Cakewalk things including the PC modules, FabFilter and so forth, there are no problems what so ever.

But the funny part is that sometimes it works! And it seems like it always works in a fresh project. But I am not entirely sure. I have no idea when this started. I started working on a mix the last couple of weeks and started draging in the Overloud stuff and the waves stuff in and this was the first time I've noticed this issue. I've only had the Overloud plugs for a month.

The mixes are moving a long nicely but would like to get to the bottom of this. I've e-mailed back and forth with Overloud and they don't understand anything so I'm pretty sure it has something to do with my box. It's fairly new, a year old IIRC. The only old thing I have in it is the video card...

So the question is, can this be a video card issue?

Thanks for any thoughts on this

The weirdest problems I've ever experienced with audio programs have related to video cards and drivers, but I don't know if that's the case with your situation. I keep an old video card around just as a reality check for testing.

Have you tried disabling X-Ray yet?

    Hey guys!

Thanks for the replies and sorry for taking so long in geting back to you.

@Anderton - yeah, video cards are a mystery to me too! My video card - some ATI thing IIRC - have worked really well all these years. But I'm wondering if there's been a driver update that messes with hos the GUI is drawn or something. I loaded up The Secret World last night, I'm not a gamer but I have that installed since I have some music in it, and previously I haven't had any problems running it. But it started naging about some drivers being outdated. Updating them again didn't work. But the standalones of the Overloud plugs work fine so it must be something happening inside Sonar. I'm thinking of geting a nVidia based video card, a cheap one, just to check if it remedies these issues. As far as I can tell, no one else seem to be experiencing this. And this is the only thing I can see is the problem. But I may be completely off on this.

@StarTekh - That Visual Studio thing looks quite Win8 centric. I didn't understand much of it. Will that help? I have Windows 7 and don't want to install more software to get something as basic to work. I'd rather replace the hardware.

@Dcumpian - Thanks for that and that is a good idea. I did because Waves have always been really buggy with X-Ray, and tried to open and close the plugin windows in a couple of projects. At first it worked, then it started crashing again. So everything was pretty much unchanged. But I will experiment with this a bit more later.

    Thanks!!

    Ah, getcha!

I will look into it. I'm getting a nerd over tonight to help investigate. Thanks for the tip

Aaarggh! This is really geting on my nerves now!

Last night I had a mixing session after my nerdbuddy came in and just checked my drivers and system config. I didn't have a single crash because of plug in windows not opening properly. Overloud and Waves stuff poped up nicely.

Today it started again. And I know that since last night, no updates to anything have been installed. Played with the X-Ray setings and it really doesn't matter if it's on or not. It's just really random.

I'll try to borrow a video card from someone and see if I can make it play with that before I buy a new one....
