The first Spacey p-ups are in...
As some of you may have seen our Michael (Spacey) started making some hand wound pickups, as he showed the pics of how it all came together awhile ago.
He most kindly sent me the first 3 ever produced to fit in my £50 clunker guitar. I've been a bit poorly of late so I wasn't able to fit them when they first arrived but I managed to fit them this evening. (I only had two to put in as I recieved the first (bridge) pick up earlier on.)
I was advised when adjusting the pick up heights to start with the neck which proved to be a valuable tip. I did the adjustments purely by ear as I'm no guitar tech so I hope I'm in the right ball-park with them, I've measured the distances from pole to string on the bottom and top E whilst holding the string down on the last fret and after adjusting by ear the tendency seems to be I have the top E a fraction higher than the bottom E on each pick-up and each subsequent pick-up starting from the neck is slightly closer.
So I'm roughly 4mm on the bottom E at the neck end slightly higher at the top E. On the bridge pup I'm a shade over 2 mm away at the top E and the middle pup is between the two. As I say I did this by ear trying to find a good balance between clear tone and not killing the sustain by being too close to the magnets amd finding a good balance between switch positions without getting big level jumps when switching between pups.
I'm not sure I've gone about it the right way but it sure has transformed my humble axe into sounding really cool.
I'm starting to quite enjoy all this messing with geetars, who'd have thunk it.
I'm so grateful to Michael he's been a real diamond over the last few months, he even sent my partner the most beautiful sapele box with and ebony lid complete with inlaid fret markers and actual frets and hand-made wooden pinned hinges. I'll get some pics of it it is a real precious treasure.
