Tutorials for synth settings?
Is there any place for people to learn the basics of synth patching?
I'm thinking about the real deal stuff where you take a single tone and make it do things. The kind of stuff Bob Moog and his peers might speak of in a casual conversation.
It seems like each person has more CPU horsepower on their DAW than we use to send a robot to Mars but people seem to think we need presets to get sound out of our synths.
Why is that?
It seems to me that it must be because there is some disconnect with the info about how easy it is to tweak up a patch and make a groovy sound.
So I am wondering... where are the tutorials about basic synth patching?

I'm too lazy to build a sound.
I have a Yamaha DX-27S which, according to the manual, has the ability to allow users to "build their own" sounds....and 127 memory locations in which to save them..... I tried it once.... I'm not a sound programmer.
not enough time for me to set around and create a new sound from scratch..... I'll use the preset sounds....and if that's not good enough....one of the Komplete synths (I forget which one) has the ability to alter the original patch with knobs and other gizmos..... more then sufficient to keep me entertained for hours.
For you guys who do find that fascinating.... my hat is off to ya.

Hi Herb,
The funny thing is... I don't have the patience to scroll through presets and twisting up a patch seems so fast and intuitive for me.
It seems we are both motivated by the same urge and have found different paths to get where we want.

Yeah... I hear ya...
I will sometimes spend an inordinate amount of time just browsing the hundreds of presets in some of the NI synths ...exploring and frittering the time... and it's kinda fun. Like a treasure hunt.... sometimes turning up a cool patch or sometimes ...OMG what was that? ....
or in some cases, actually looking for a synth sound that I think might fit into a project.....

The DX FM series are a major pain to program from SCRATCH.................................. Most "new" software synths have multi stage ADSRs on the and VCA Filters, thus making for a complex sound and programming............................................ The easiest way, contrary to your thinking , is to take an existing patch as a foundation and start twisting knobs(or mousing, in the virtual world).......................... Perhaps the easiest to understand and program are the old school (and reissue) hardware synthes that had one or two VCOs, a simple ADSR envelope and simple 12 0r 24 pole filters. You saw a know with its legend, you crank it, you immediately hear the results

Even worse ... I have a midi board hooked up and all that and some software, and it all works great ... but when it came time to get help so I could use a DAW properly and add things to the work, or subtract, or change anything ... all those folks disappeared! And I offered to pay top price! ... and at least one person would not even reply to the emails!
As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!
