The Dream Song

My music video using only Sonar 5

The Dream Song

 The Dream Song

The Story Of The Song

Way back when I was using Sonar 5 I wanted to learn more about making videos. So one night I had a dream. In this dream I was with a band back stage and the arena was packed. I could hear the unsettled crowd backstage as the people were waiting for the concert to begin.

Nothing was familiar. I did not know anyone in this group, but they all knew me. Someone said time to start and everyone went on stage. They started playing this song. I was still backstage but I could hear everything going on and being played. I began playing the melody/lead part backstage. I could hear excitement in the crowd as people started cheering. I walked out on stage right when the chorus part was being played and the crowed went nuts. I was near the end of the song then I woke up.

My first thought was what a great dream. My second thought was what a great song! I jumped out of bed a ran to the studio in haste. I did not want this dream to leave me without getting that song. I opened up Sonar and recorded the melody very quickly. Then I saved the project and went about my day. I soon forgot all about the dream and the melody as I typically don't remember my dreams.

A few months later I am cleaning out my audio folder and I stumble across and play the audio that I recorded that morning I had the dream. The whole dream came back to me and I remembered everything in one brief instance. So I began to record all the parts. When it came time to record the last part, (the solo part) I decided to film myself playing the solo. Then I would sink it up in sonar after the song was mixed.

The only camera I had belonged to my wife. She filmed me while I played the song. I had no video editing software. All I had was a cheap camera that shot video too. I imported the video and mixed the song. then I exported the song. I was amazed at how much better the audio sounded then the typical you tube video.

Years later I got video cameras and Sony Vegas. I imported the video from the archives and stuck an intro and ending credits on it. Then I uploaded it.

So check out the dream song using Only Sonar 5 and made years ago. It is the only song I have ever written in my Sleep.

Marcus, this is fantastic!  It's a pleasure to see you play, and I enjoyed this video very much.  When S5 came out, I thought that it was the best version ever, and that I'd never need another DAW.  It was rock solid, and I recorded the better part of 2 CDs on it.  You made good use of yours.  Keep them coming!

    All the best,

This was really good :-) I would say, less jeans, and more spandex... And while you are technically "very good?" When you're on the video like this? :-) You need to move around! Smile at the camera! Dance! Even if you're just playing to the recording and dubbing it?  That Les Paul sounds great man.

"Way back when I was using Sonar 5 I wanted to learn more about making videos." I wanted to, and tried? But my co-stars would never agree to my terms and conditions... :-( WAIT!? Are we talking about the same thing?

    really good, Marcus!

however, I have to ask - why didn't you just make the dream into the video instead of having people read about it in the video?

Lynn I felt the same way about S5 I skipped over a version and upgraded to Sonar 7. I did not think it was as good as 5. Then Sonar 8 came out and that was the best version for that time. That was right before Roland took over. So I have been upgrading on a regular basis since that version. Thanks for taking the time to watch my very first video.

The Band19 This was the first time I made a video by recording the sound separately  then syncing it to the video. and using Sonar to do it was a great way to learn. Today I use Sony Vegas and Sonar together. Back then i was more focused on the project then the look. But you have a valid point. My guitar lesson videos are much better. I did not have co-stars and something tells me we are not talking about the same thing,...but maybe the same process. Thanks for taking the time to listen.

Beagle I think the main reason was budget constraints. Although.... that is a good idea. Thank you for watching.

Guitartrek Thank you for taking the time to watch the video and to comment on it.

Marcus, sounds really good. Like the tone of the guitar. Nice playing. At first I thought the lead might come up some but as I listened it was fine. I agree about the text intro. Too long. Might lose some viewers with that. Everyone is so restless.

chasmcg You make a great point about the text. i guess i got excited because the song was written in my sleep. Your right it likes watching a Star Wars intro. every one is just waiting for the movie to begin. I won't do that again.

eko Thank you for your kind words and Thanks for taking the time to listen

Daryl Crowley I was in my early 40's when I made that video. I like everything guitar too unless it is played out of tune. I love your music and I listen to everything you post. Thanks for your kind words.

GREAT piece of music!  I really enjoy seeing the performance.  I only wish more forum members would make videos, very cool!  Getting a bit of the Satriani vibe from the guitar tone.  My only nit is the video is a bit long for the few angle shots used to keep interest.  KUDOS!

    Marcus,

Now this is really Guitar Guy stuff, here. Great performance.

My only comment is that  the rythm section is not as good as the lead guitar. An aggresive drummer (i.e. Mitch Mitchell) would be all over the place with rythmic flourishes and fills to push and highlight the outstanding gutar work.

    White hot guitar!

    Cheers,

Fantastic!  All of it!  That you dreamed it, that you remembered it, that you played it all, that you videoed it, and that you can play that way!  I really enjoyed the tune, and watching you play the lead too...wow!!  Nice!

Daryl I am a big fan of everything you post as well. I listen to everything you post. I spent some time on your sound click page one day just listening to all your fantastic work. I think we are both Guitar lovers

Drumstixkev +1 on more performance videos from other members. There are a lot of really good musicians on this forum. I did not use a real video camera when I made this. my resources were limited. I agree there should be more angle shots. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video.

Bert Guy Unfortunately my drum skills are limited and I no longer have my set. These days I just use session drummer. The main reason for this is I just have a small home studio with very little space. I love a good rhythm section. I tried to reproduce the song exactly the way it was in my dream. So i did not embellish those areas. but your right. I needed a better drummer. My skills are lacking in that area. Thank you for your comment and thank you for taking the time to watch the video

Janet Many Thanks for your comments and I am glad you liked the video.

    That was fun.

I can never remember my dreams when I wake up and if I wake up in the middle of the night with a song in my head or from a dream..... there's no way I'm getting out of bed to write it down let alone fire up the studio at 3am to start recording.... more power to ya...

    Outstanding.

My apologies for the late reply. been down for the count and was ill for a while. I forgot all about this song.

Daryl1968 Thank you sir. Glad you liked the tone.

Makke Thanks bud I appreciate the time you took to listen

James1213 Thanks for taking the time to listen. I'm glad you liked it

Frank (Notnat) Thanks bro glad you liked it

Guitarhacker generally I remember my dreams for about the first 2 minutes then they leave me. That is why I was in a hurry to record the melody for that song.

rscain I generally take a long time to wake up which is why I think I remember things for a few minutes. If I forget where I am my wife is right there to remind me and to tell me to go make coffee. Thank you for the kind words sir.

Foxwolfen Thank you for taking the time to listen and comment
