The first computer I owned was a 486. It was craptastic. I just found the old hardrives I yanked out of it. Not sure how I can access the data on them. It's mostly just lyrics and crappy MS paint art but I still want it.

Just put them in an external IDE USB case or get an IDE to USB adapter from your favorie online store.

So have any of you guys used Kinetic? Is this just garbage? I won't bother installing it if it is.

No, but... "Cakewalk is marketing Kinetic to the DJ/remix crowd, but the program is flexible enough that it could be used for any groove-oriented music."

@soens... I actually have a cage that takes IDEs but I wasn't sure about these drives. They're just so old but I guess it would either be IDE or SCSI from that era... and I think the cage takes SCSI too. I'll have to check it out. Same with the Kinetic stuff too. I played with it briefly ages ago but I had no idea how to use it. Seemed to have some interesting sounds but I'm under the impression X2 probably fills those needs. Maybe not.

Core memory is what was used as memory before there were RAM chips.  It was used in the same way as RAM is today the deference is size and power also cost. This was in the days when programs were run from paper tape. To get a display you needed a TTY console. No CRTs or nice little computer keyboards.  Mice were only rodents.

Here is some more info on it.

I have a laptop circa 1993-- that still works fine--with Cakewalk 3.1.

It locks to picture/sympte time code thru a Peavy TC>midi sync box with a 3/4" video machine.

I sunk up an AKAI DR4d digital 4 track and a yamah O1V mixer (w/automated faders).  Midi synths where Proteus 1 & 2 , and 2 Roland JV1010s w/Orch cards

I made a small fortune using this rig for 7 years.  Other than replacing the 20 meg hard drive in 1999 after it crashed I had no problems with it.  It is all set up in the back room and I can turn it on run it at anytime.
