I want a new interface > Where should I shop?

All prices seem the same. Any suggestions? Thanks!

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

If I could afford it right now I probably would buy it. I can't justify it. Looks like a nice unit.

Go to Sweetwater. You can't beat their service. My Octa-capture just had a labatomy. It was outside the one year factory warranty but Sweetwater had a two year. It's fixed!

Their prices may not always be the absolute lowest around, but their after-the-sale service has always been the best IMHO.   I also purchased my 18i6 and BCF2000 though them.

I'd use Sweetwater but I think it would end up costing me more up here in Canada so I stick with a retailer up here who delivers.

For online stuff though these are probably your safest/easiest solutions.

    Amazon
    NewEgg
    Sweetwater

Would anyone offer a local store an opportunity to mach best price? or is there any value in that? I kinda like supporting my local store, but I'm not sure it matters much anymore. Sweetwater might be a better company than my local retailer.

I found that a lot of the time the guys I used were only slightly more expensive than the big online places if there was any price difference at all. Just give your local places a call and see what's up. It's also sometimes easier to return if something goes wrong.

I always give my local retailer the opportunity to match price, and most of the time they can.

If you don't throw some business their way once in a while, they might not be there the next time you need a mic cable or guitar strings for a gig that night. Between the giant chains and online retailers, the traditional mom 'n pop music store has become an endangered species.

But if I ever do want to buy hardware online, Sweetwater is where I go. As with any retailer, their recommendations are often based on margins, sales incentives and manufacturer promotions. However, their liberal return policy removes the risk of buying something you haven't actually held in your hands first.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Oh and I'd contact the manufacturer to see if they have done any testing with Sonar and scour the internet for any conflicts with Sonar and any other hardware/software you'll be using it with. Cheers.

That's the drawback of big corporations. The mom  'n pop stores are going to die out. They can't compete with the lower prices of the big corporations. Sad but true. How many mom 'n pop drug stores do you know of anymore?

I'm with Bit.  Driving to a brick and mortor building ain't as easy as point and click but you'll help them stay open.

Probably the most important thing is being able to return the interface if it doesn't work.  Yes, not probable but possible, and there is nothing worse than getting all pumped up to play w/ a new toy and having it turn into a three week tech do-it-yourself support.

All good suggestions, especially Bit's- but I always save a lot of money buying on eBay! I got two Focusrite Sapphire Pro40's for under $600 for both, shipped! Superb sounding interface- chaining two of them with firewire gives you 16 channels of analog I/O, which can handle most sessions.

There's a lot to be said for eBay for used musical stuff! Also, you can sell the stuff you don't need- eBay is awesome!

Win7 Pro 64 bit sp1, i7-960 Intel processor, 8 gig RAM, SSD 64gig boot drive, Samsung F3 1TB D drive, nVidia Quadro 600 video card, Gigabyte X58A mobo, LG Blu-ray drive, 500 Gig E, F Drives, dual-monitors: 26" each, 2 X Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 ASIO hardware I/O's, Tascam US-428 control surface, Sonar 8.5.3 and X1 Producer, Avid Media Composer 5.0.4, Vintage 42-input Amek console, much outboard analog audio gear, acoustic world instruments, and noise toys!

You wont go wrong with any RME equipment. Fireface800 is also great. The nice thing about the UFX it has effects you can apply as you record built in. Plus the Total Mix routing software is the best out there.

My advice if you are going for an external interface is to try to find a unit that supports USB3. The reason being is many new motherboards don't support firewire 400/800 and while PCI firewire cards can be found the motherboards want PCIe. PCIe can be found but are much thinner on the ground and if you have SLI dual graphics cards then that can limit physically and electronically, which slots are available on the motherboard. USB3 is fast and may help future proof your interface at least for a generation or two of common standards for motherboards.

There's a bit of a chicken-and-egg thing going on with audio interfaces. Firewire used to be considered more of a purists interface, with some interface models having slightly better features (i.e. higher bit depth and sample rates) than some of the USB models. That's no longer necessarily true, but you'll notice there hasn't been any new products in a while. Manufacturers are cleaning (profit-wise) up using the older USB 2.0 chipsets, so there's a dearth of USB 3.0 audio interfaces. Also, the USB 3.0 interfaces might eat into profits from their higher-dollar PCIe-plus-external box products since they have similar capacities.

Me? I wanna TC Electronics Desktop Konnekt 6 (built-in reverb on monitor solves a lot of recording latency issues), Presonus Audiobox VSL runs a close second...

My local mom and pop shop said they couldn't order from RME, but my Guitar Center brick and mortar ordered it for me at this price plus the cost of shipping and tax.

Did the best I could. Thanks for your help, everyone!

I just updated my system and there are plenty of mobos out there with firewire, so I stuck with my firewire interface.  You may have to pay a bit more.  Bitflipper told me on a post a while back (sic) "USB 3 has not real advantages over USB 2 as far as audio capability."
