Sitting in an Anechoic Chamber
This is an article about a guy who contacted a testing company and requested to sit in their anechoic chamber (after serving aboard a navy ship). I thought the article was interesting because the article talked a little bit about the testing that is done on consumer products (things like vacuum cleaners). Basically, they say consumers demand quite appliances but they can’t be made too quite because the consumer needs to have the security that the product is doing something. Before we moved, we had remodeled our kitchen with a top of the line dishwasher that was completely silent and all of the indicator lights were inside of the unit (on the top of the door). It drove my wife crazy because she had to open it to see if it was running all the time (because I would randomly start a load of dishes). http://todaynews.today.com/_news/2012/11/23/15385024-the-sound-of-silence-sailor-finds-peace-in-worlds-quietest-room?lite

There's a book, whose title I cannot remember; something about zero db, or searching for silence. I heard the author interviewed on NPR and it sounded like a cool premise. Basically, he was inspired by life in noisy NYC to seek out absolute silence and wrote about his visits to various quiet places, culminating in an anechoic chamber. Being a fan of silence myself and also finding it elusive, I've been looking for that book, so if anyone happens to know its title and author, let me know.

I had this for a couple weeks: When you walked in it seemed like sound was being vacuumed out of your head.

I was in one one time..the silence is unreal, you can hear the blood running thru your viens and your heart beating...there was one standard 60-100 watt light bulb in the chamber, and you could hear it humming. Everything else was so quiet, it sounded loud !!

Don't think I've ever heard complete silence. Even as a kid I had a very small amount of tinnitus. Got much worse after years of excessive audio abuse in my teens and twenties though.... I would love it to stop, in a wistful sighing "what if" kind of a way, but other than that it doesn't really bother me any more. Unless of course I were in an anechoic chamber! These days I take a magnesium supplement before I do any headphone work, because that has been shown to minimize hearing damage from noise. Vitamins A, C and E are protective too.

Remember the isolation tanks that were all the rage in the 70's? The idea was to remove as much sensory input as possible by shutting out light and sound, while floating in salt water for weightlessness. People would go in for hours and swear that only a few minutes had passed. Others described psychedelic and/or transcendental experiences. The only negative side-effect was wrinkly skin, and perhaps missed appointments. Sounds pretty cool.

I remember the first time I went in a steam room at the gym, it got so steamy that all I could see was white. And for a while I felt like I was detached from my body, a bit like being on acid. However I managed to tell myself that I was actually in a room full of sweaty men and I came back down to earth pretty quickly.

I once dropped acid in a sauna. Maybe it was something like that. Except for the sweaty men part - it was just me and a girl named Beth who owned a VW bus with flowers painted on the side. The flowers were painted on the bus, not Beth.
