Can I use my synth guitar thru my midi keyboard to Sonar? SOLVED-No-SPEND $

I have a GR20 guitar synth with midi in and out but no USB and an Alesis QX25 keyboard with midi out only and USB to the computer.
Can I use the keyboard as an interface for my GR20 and be able to input midi to Sonar with the guitar thru the keyboard?
If so, what would the track settings be?

You will need a midi device with midi-in to connect the GR20 to the PC.

    Ah, right. Ok thanks.
My other device is a DR880 drum machine that has MIDI in and out and a USB out.
Could I use that at all?
I've never tried it as midi for anything but I'm just learning now that I got the keyboard and going thru options.

Glenn, I'm unfaimiliar with the GR20 but I do have an Axon. My understanding is MIDI guitars have a unique connector to the device that decodes the MIDI input. So for me my signal is Guitar -> Axon - MIDI out.

From there I can connect my MIDI out to any MIDI in. So I would think if the GR20 has a MIDI out you should be able to connec that up to the DR880.

glenn the only way that you could work that is if one of the devices has a midi thru port. http://www.tonalsoft.com/....2005-07-21.17-00.aspx

I agree with Swamp Tooth.. your best bet is the UNO... midi cable in and USB out to puter.

Will work like a charm and it isnt' to heavy on the wallet.

I use my gr20 and record both the audio outputs and the midi in cakewalk.I record through my fast track ultra. I also use the gr20 as a midi controller for th2.

I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

    Ok, a thruport, thanks again.
It looks as if a cheap midi/usb is the ticket for the GR20, tho I did try one a year ago and got unacceptable delay.
Some folks here said it was common on that device so I took it back.
I now know a bit more about buffers so should give it another try.
GSWITZ do you have an acceptable delay with your GR20 when overdub tracking?

if you're talking about punches, milliseconds count. set the punch in/out points on the midi track about a quarter note before and after the section you're going to record then quantize or edit in prv.

I can use my GR 33 and my GR 20. I go through the midi on my Audio interface and I go through the Midi on my Midi controller keyboard. look in preferences under midi click on devices. if your audio interface has midi it will be listed there. plug in to your audio interface and make sure it is checked marked in Preferences/Midi/devices

The only problem with the Alesis is it only has midi out which means it won't receive data from the gr 20. I agree that your best bet without spending any money is to use the 880 drum machine instead of the Alesis.

It's not the money as the 1x1 is peanuts.
(Hopefully it does not have too much latency.) I just thought it would be nice to include some of the gear I already have into the chain.
I've never been able to make midi in Sonar with either the GR20 or the DR 880 -just audio.
Now that I am committed to learning some MIDI, I didn't want to overlook the possibilities.

    Well I never have, directly.
I have a Boss Roland BR800 digital recorder that I use as my sound card so I sent the audio directly thru the BR800 to Sonar audio tracks via the RCA jacks.
The BR800 does not have MIDI in out or thru unfortunately.
That's all I could figure out but it leaves me with a stereo drum track instead of midi so I'm limited for editing there.

Ah, so to send midi from/to the dr880 via usb you need to do this...

    Switching the USB function

Before you connect the DR-880 to your

computer, you must specify whether the DR-880

will use USB for “SMF import/data backup/

    recovery,” or “MIDI communication.”

    1. With playback stopped, press [EDIT].

    The edit menu screen appears.

    2. Move the cursor to the “USB” icon and

    press [ENTER].

    The USB menu screen appears.

    3. Move the cursor to the “MODE” icon and

    press [ENTER].

The USB mode setting screen appears.

    fig.09-010d

    4. Use the VALUE dial to select the desired

    USB function.

    STORAGE:

Choose this if you want to import SMF data,

    or back up/recover data.

    MIDI:

Choose this if you want to transmit/receive

MIDI messages between the DR-880 and

    your computer.

    5. When you’ve made the setting, press

    [EXIT].

The message “Now writing...” will appear,

and the USB function will be saved.

When the USB function have been saved, the

    message will disappear.

    6. Switch off the DR-880, then turn the power back on again.

Then, start sonar and the dr880 should show up in sonar midi device list. you can set up a midi track to send output to the unit, or send one to receive input from the unit's pads.

    Well well, cool as hell.
All this time I could have had midi drums all separated out.
This is going to be huge for me 'cause I'm pretty familiar with programming the 880 tracks.
    Now what?
I have a midi track recorded from the DR 880 and it looks as if there are lots of data in different (channels?) on the track.
I also have an audio track but no sound.
Next, can someone tell a Nube how to get some sound from this track?
I must somehow link it to a drum synth inside Sonar ..or can I even use the samples from the DR880 as well?

right... just assign any synth (insert a simple instrument track with tts-1 and leave it on piano) and make sure track echo is on. then just hit the pads on the dr880. you'll see what i mean.

So the Drum machine also has MIDI in and out but not thru.
Does that mean I can't use the drum machine to midi my Gr20 to Sonar?

So the Drum machine also has MIDI in and out but not thru.
Does that mean I can't use the drum machine to midi my Gr20 to Sonar?

    yes

Right. Not possible, due to lack of THRU port.

However, you can record MIDI from your GR into your DR (with the DR in "MIDI storage" mode) and then later transfer it via USB into Sonar (with the DR in USB MIDI mode). Might want to try that.

(might have the settings backwards/wrong, going by memory here, but the manual should make it clear, since you can only use the DR's MIDI ports or the DR's USB, not both at the same time, depending upon the mode you set, but I do know it can in fact be done)

You can of course also use your GR as a MIDI controller for the DR as well, say, if you wanted to play some bass sounds. Try it!

Edited to never mind - Goddard's post covered what I was going to suggest trying.

No, MIDI and USB ports on DR are exclusive, can't both be active at same time, it's either/or.

Roland/Boss put some goofy limitations in their little boxes, always driven me nuts, especially in the days when the Japlish manuals were much worse than what they output today.

Well thanks for thinking outside the box anyway.
I think he was saying it would be a two stage process.
That might make it hard to play along with Sonar playback tho.
I put the little UNO interface on my list.
Crossing my fingers that the latency is ok.

My oldest brother used to go to Japan and get paid to correct translation errors.

His favorite was our 'Batman', which they translated to 'Man with face of bat',

+1 on the correctness of this info - it's one or the other - just confirmed it in the manual.
