FastBikerBoy TBH now that layers have already been removed I'd rather the bakers focus on improving lanes and hopefully appease those that don't like them that much that way rather than re-introducing something that is sure to take development time. That's not to say they shouldn't have been left as an option for those that preferred them but what's done is done and I doubt it's quite as easy as just "sticking them back in". I agree I definitely don't want both, though I don't really care which method is used. Both layers and lanes have problems and short comings, I'd rather the development effort be put fully into one or the other and lanes probably would be the better choice for future enhancement and the code is already in X2. I also really hope they do something about the wasted space that lanes create with the empty parent track, that alone, just the look of it is enough to turn me off of lanes. Other than that I like them and I think they will be better than layers after a bit of enhancement. Dan

What should happen is when you select a Lane it pops into that main track space so you can edit it there. When you collapse the lanes that lane stays in the track and only that lane (but have an option to show the hidden lanes underneath it as well but I have no use for that).

Actually I would have a use for that if they allowed you to load specific takes you wanted into it for comping. That would depend on whether they fixed the problem that makes overlapping audio in the same track sound like poop. I can't be the only one who hears that.

Layers should be brought back and made to act like envelopes. You have three options for envelopes currently available in X2: 1. hidden from track 2. view all on a single track 3. each envelope separated out on lanes I'd like to see three options for "takes" that are analogous to the above: 1. composite view of takes on track (in X1 and X2) 2. view layers on a single track (removed from X1) 3. each layer separated out on lanes (in X2) We've lost that option 2 for takes in X2 that were there in many versions leading up to X1. There are many workflow aspects or viewing aspects lost as a result. And as someone mentioned above, layers do NOT necessarily imply takes. I've mentioned something similar in other threads. I truly hope we can get this resolved. These are some of the distinguishing items that, for me, separated Sonar from the pack.

Conar Tracklanes are completely counter intuitive, Layers were maybe messier but man could you fly with editing. But I think that the real problem with Tracklanes is the that the whole clip HANDLE (to move them around) thing really shows it's clunkiness. In whole honnesty I really miss just being able to grab a clip and move it around quickly without having to AIM to some sort of handle... this is slowing me down big time. Just a FYI........the clip header can be turned off so that clips act as in X1. TV Menu--->View--->Display--->Maximise Waveform Height

Summary: everyone has their preference. Mine is lanes, layers were horrible. I could never find anything, it was always hidden, and trying to slip edit a layer was hopeless.

Beepster Man, they need some work for sure but I hope all the squeaking about them doesn't get them coded out of the software. I like them better than layers for a lot of reasons (which I've blathered on about extensively in other threads so I won't bother here). If any Bakers read these threads please for the love of FSM don't go back to layers. Just add them as an alternative to lanes if it comes down to it. Cheers. Rest Easy Beepster... Guessing from recent trends and decisions the company appears to be making, I'm sure we're "stuck" with lanes for a time to come. I can only hope that they find some way to return the needed features so that it can operate as layers or lanes.... I doubt they're gonna toss that much development time... (Much to my chagrin) My screen is now so hard to read that it's beyond belief for me (as compared to the "cluttered" look of 8.5.3). And my work flow has slowed to accommodate the myriad of issues that lanes brought to the table. At least the smart grid and auto zoom stuff can be disabled. I had hopes for them but neither are working well for me... Lanes? A nightmare I must deal with constantly. I tried to go back to working with tracks and no lanes/layers but I'm so used to my plugins operating on a track (as opposed to a bus) and the redundant use of plugins for these tracks feels like such a resource hog.... I forget that my new DAW can handle the extra load much of the time and end up using lanes in a half-brained thought that I'm still using layers! <sigh>... Keni

SteveStrummerUK Martin, you might want to check out some of the comments in THIS THREAD too. I think they should have kept Layers as an option myself. The removal of Layers is the only reason I have not upgraded to X2, and never will. Layers were much better than Lanes IMO. Im going to live with X1 for another year, then move on to another DAW package.
