Dunno, I think the best set of variations regarding an enigma is Elgar's take on the subject.
As for making sure one doesn't fall prey to the condition described by the OP, some sort of rear guard action may prove helpful.

Apparently, you inserted your plug-ins into something called a “plugboard” but, I couldn’t give a rats’s arse.
