SOLVED: Sonar X2 Essentials 64 bit + XNL Addictive Drums 64 bit + Windows 8 64 bit = Crash
Hi, I have purchased Sonar X2 Essentials, but I have problem with XNL Addictive drums, after inserting it as soft synth, Sonar X2 usually freezes and crash. Sonar X2 Essentials 64 bit XNL Addictive Drums 64 bit Windows 8 64 bit Thank you for any support

Ekral - welcome to the forum (though note that this is a user forum, not an official Sonar support site).
The likely source of your issue is going to be drivers somewhere along the line. But before that, could you post your full system stats (including pc configuration, audio interface etc). Best to add them to your signature so they'll always appear in your posts.

thank you for reply. What is the official Sonar support site?
I have still problems with XNL Addictive Drums (AD) and Sonar X2 (X2). Each time I try to insert AD as a new synth track into X2, it takes several minutes and sometimes crash. Unfortunately, when I save project with AD track, close X2 and the reopen that project, it takes more then 5 minutes and freezes computer.
Other plugins are OK and I have also no problems with AD and Reaper 64-bit installed on the same computer. I it looks like, that AD is trying to pre-load all samples, while the X2 project is opening.

Please list your system specifications (CPU, MOBO, RAM, hardrives, etc...) including what audio interface you are using. Be aware that because you are on Windows 8 you may encounter problems with some of your hardware if you have not installed Win 8 drivers for said hardware and many companies have not released Win 8 drivers yet. Also Cakewalk has not released an X2 patch for Win 8 yet. It should be the next patch released. However we seem to have a few folks on here getting Sonar to work with Win 8 with decent results.
Also I've seen a couple people complaining about Addictive Drums. Go to the XNL forum and ask there as well. They are quite helpful. There is no official support forum for Cakewalk. Just tech support who you can email or call. Ask them about optimizing your system for audio and they'll give you a bunch of system tweaks that should help as well. Welcome to the forum.

Ekral, Welcome to the forum and Sonar... I use AD under X2 on Win 8 without any issues whatsoever... One of the BIGGEST mistakes that gets made is using the 32 bit version of AD in X2. It can appear to be the 64 bit verison, but isn't really the 64 bit version. While it should work, bitbridge or jbridge don't seem to like the 32 bit version of AD. Are you installing from a Disk or from the On Line Installer? I recommend using the On Line installer, as it will install both the 64 bit version of AD and 32 bit version. For me, there are 2 iterations of AD....the 32 bit and the 64 bit. 64 bit version is flawless for me. I don't even bother using the 32 bit version. And, as has been stated, it could be a driver issue as well. I use a Roland Quad Capture, and have no issues with AD running under X2, and it's on all my current projects. Cheers!

Hi cclarry,
thank you for info. I have used online installer. I will check if I really use right 64-bit version. Roland Quad-Capture has the most stable driver and it works great with X2 so I think there are no problems related to driver.
The strange thing is that the same 64-bit Addictive Drums works fine with Reaper 64-bit installed on the same machine.

I have checked that and I have really installed only 64-bit version of Addictive Drums.
I have also found, that the crash is random and is the report of last error:

I would like also notice, that while Sonar X2 is trying to open project with Addictive Drums before it crash, the hard disk works intensively.
Do you now if there are any debug tools for Sonar X2, so I can find out what is the problem myself?
I contacted cakewalk support 3 days ago, but I have not any response yet :(. That is quite disappointing, usually I get fast response from product support.

Did you manage to solve it? I think I have similar problem with my projects loading 4-5 min. and sometimes crash. I was wondering what can cause this as it shouldn't be this way, and I always use AD. Please let me know! It's been a real pain in the neck...

If you used the Online Installer then there will be 2 instances of
AD on you Plugins list...they won't be identified. It will just show AD
twice.
One is the 64 bit and one is the 32 bit.
I recommend excluding the 32 bit from your list with the Plugin Manager, just so
you don't use it accidentally. Or rename it in the List to AD 32 bit.
You'll have to trace the plugin path so you know which is which, as it won't indicate
which is which.
Another important thing is to not have both X2 and AD on the same hard drive.
That will cause problems also. The program will have to work extra hard and may
crash due to that. Keep programs on one drive and instruments and sounds on another.
Barring those things I don't know....
I use it on Win 8 64 bit with Quadcapture 1.5.1 and X2a without issue all the time...
they reside on different drives...
I'd also run the XLN Installer to make sure everything is up to date...

Hi, I got answer from XLN at their support forum: "I'm happy to say that our developers seem to have found the cause of these issues. This is an error on Sonar's side, and we have reported it to them. In the meantime we have built a new "Addictive Drums.dll" that includes a fix for this issue. Please download this zip and use the "Addictive Drums.dll" to replace your current 64-bit DLL (check the Advanced page in the Online Installer if you're not sure where the current DLL is located): http://xlnaudio.usa.s3.amazonaws.com/ad ... 64-fix.zipPlease note that if you run the Online Installer after replacing the DLL, the Online Installer will say that Addictive Drums needs repair. If you let it repair, it will put the original DLL back. this is a little confusing that XLN says sonar admits that its their fault, but yet we have built a whole new .DLL ?
Id love to hear the explanation behind this one.

As goofy as that explanation sounds, it may well be something like that.
I know that there have been occasions where Sonar has altered their code to deal with faulty plugin logic from some 3rd-party plugin.
And, I use Brainspawn's Forte performance VST Host software, and they did the same kind of thing because the folks at Presonus had used some completely off the wall field for passing some bit of data back and forth. They were actually kind enough to change THEIR code to handle a deficiency in the Presonus driver code.
So, it can and does happen. Did it this time? Who knows?

I find it completely odd that I use AD constantly without issues and without
this "Patch"....and Addictive Keys as well with no issues...and no crashes...
I'm with Chuckebaby...I want to hear the "whys" of this one...
If it's Sonars fault (maybe coding) they may have found a workaround to
address the coding...but still, this sounds highly suspect to me...
