Make changes to your computer?

After I first installed Sonar X2 Studio, I don't recall seeing a message box when I launched it.  Now, several weeks later, each time I launch Sonar I get a message box: "Do you want to allow the program to make changes to your computer?"

Did something happen to change things or maybe I just didn't pay any attention to that message at first.  Can anyone explain what this is all about - anything I should be concerned about?  Sonar is the only program I've come across that does this.

HP Pavillion P6000, Windows 7 64-bit, Tascam US-144 mkII, Sonar X2 Studio build 306 x64.

Tony,

This usually happens when a program is running as with administrator rights from what I have seen.

Turn off UAC (user account control) in Windows.

Thanx, Luna.  That was simple enough to fix.  I just right clicked the X2 icon on my desktop, went to properties, and unchecked "run as administator."  Now it starts up like other programs.  I never would have figured that out without your help.

Tony,

No problem.. The only thing to keep in mind is with some of the older cakewalk synths (pentagon comes to mind) they will not load properly without this right under W7 64 for some reason.  If this happens just start with that checked and they will load.  Good Luck!

If you turn off UAC you will never have to do this again.

UAC is the recommended and default behavior for Windows, and while it is annoying, it is also in place to help prevent malicious software from running without your knowledge.

Last time I checked, the 2 most highly-rated antivirus programs STILL let something like between 8-12 percent of attacks through.

Those kind of odds - no thanks - I will leave UAC on and for programs with elevated running privileges  I will hit the extra enter.

I Disagree...

I am MS Engineer and we ALL hate it. Its just there to protect numpties.

I take it that most peeps on here wouldnt be unprotected and looking at porn etc....

As always, if in doubt...have your audio machine with zero network activity. i.e dual boot or duel profile.

Bob,

not a problem if you don't have your music computer hooked up to the internet.  If you use a laptop it may be harder to do that, or only have one computer, but a 2nd computer for surfing/gaming/FB computer is dirt cheap these days.

Re:Make changes to your computer? 2012/11/28 14:46:46 (permalink)
I completely agree that turning it off on any machine not connected to the Web makes perfect sense, and I would too do so in a heart beat.  But, since my son sometimes does his homework on my computer and I also maintain a constant web connection, I will leave it on.

This computer happens to run with a major bunch of horsepower, so while I did go through the exercise of determining the savings in milliseconds of disabling all sorts of devices, startups, services, etc, I ended up deciding that the 1.6 millisecond savings wasn't worth being able to use one machine for both recording and general use.  I did take the time to write some Windows extensions to allow me to implement 2-click dynamic disabling/enabling of over 70 services to support running as lean as possible - it just hasn't been worth it to me since XP.  (wish the MS folks would have written those into the OS).
I do think the way it is implemented is stupid, but then again even without deliberate visitations to porn sites, I have had instances in the past where machines I have had it turn off have picked up viruses, and I would add that even legitimate or seemingly legitimate sites can have lurking malicious code links  - not to mention emails from people you know really coming spoofed to look like they are from familiar friends.

So, while I agree in principal on not liking UAC, for any machine hooked up online I would still recommend leaving it turned on - and for the record I too have had a rather lengthy IT career - in about 6 months it will be 40 years of IT.

Perhaps MS engineers can fix the stupid way the thing was built and implemented, to lessen its most of the time annoyance.

You are quite correct - I certainly did not mean you - there's like a zillion departments and such there and I just meant the generic brain trust that thought that nutty thing up in the first place.  Ever since the "Right Sizing" craziness of the early 90's, titles got really really bonkers, so I just try to stay generic on that.

Yes, the dev team - I hope you did not take my comments to be any swipe at you.  They certainly were not meant as such.

UAC is quite silly in its birth and existence, and whoever it was that did it should be sent to a small island with little provisions and nothing to do all day but to have to decide whether or not to let innocuous programs run or not.  I mean no mine sweeper, no solitaire - nothing - well maybe some random blue screens or long message box codes that have to be manually written down because there is no copy command for message boxes, and then after they try to look up the messages there will only be a message asking if that was helpful.  Yeah!

It is my opinion that, unless your computer is offline, leave UAC ON. It isn't that much trouble and can save you from a LOT of trouble.
