Nothing granular in any of Cake's synths (that I know of).  Rene's stuff (dimpro/rapt/Z3ta) is sample/wavetable engines (and wavetable here being a sample representation not a series of longer, discrete wave samples one scrolls through like waldorf/ppg).

Alchemy is probably the best granular synth out there for the price - well worth it if you want to do a little sound design.  Several different engines packed into it.

There are several free/cheap granular engines out there, too.

Thank you for the reply, AT! That's what I thought, too... I did know that Alchemy was granular; however it's good to know that it comes highly recommended - price-wise etc. - as that I wasn't sure of. I'll definitely consider purchasing it. I got a demo from a magazine but it's exempt of the Advanced tab, which is unfortunately the whole bloody point!

The player version?  One of the great things about Alchemy is the remix pads.  Every one of the 8 pads has a different "sound" and you move simulatenously between these settings as you move across the pads.  For a synth like alchemy, which is already deep, it alllows you to play w/ the sound/timbre in real time.  Trés cool if you design and play with sounds doing electronic music.  The player version has this feature, I think, but you are stuck w/ the preset author's setups.

Also, it works well w/ Rapture/Dimpro.  Alchemy has that thick, VA sound, while René's synths tend to cut.  Highly recommended if you want a synth to do synthesis rather than just emulate acoustic stuff.  Since you asked about granular, I figure you're a kindred soul.

Yes, the player version. Thanks again for all the valuable info. Actually, I'm somewhat of a noob and I asked the question primarily to be able to follow some tutorials I found on granular synthesis: mainly different approaches to creating kick drum sounds as, yes, I produce electronic music only (for the time being). Unfortunately Alchemy player isn't able to do so. I'm pretty happy with the way 'regular' synths such as Massive and Z3TA+2 shape audio, although it's always good to add to one's bag of tricks! And granular synthesis seems to be a bit on the occult side, which often impresses!

I may try my hand at a free granular synth that you mentioned and see what I can glean from the experience!
