I wouldn't take any of that too seriously... There are rumors of the exact opposite as well, w/ people once again quoting inside sources.

Those who tell don't know and those who know don't tell.

Is Logic being discontinued? Only by the youth of today. We older ones still use it and we mix it with a little common sense.

This whole thing seems to have originated from the Pro Tools Expert page. Not sure how reliable they usually are, but in this case they seem to make an awful lot of assumptions to say the least.

For what it's worth "pro application specialist" are marketing guys, not actual coders and developers.

A quote from the admin of Logic Pro boards, author of the Logic certification books.

"During the transition from Apple distributing Logic through conventional retail channels to distributing it exclusively in the Mac App Store, Apple laid off the Logic sales teams. Those teams' role was to place the Logic boxes in stores (Guitar Center, Sam Ash etc..), check the location and presentation of the product in the store, create in-store promotional events, etc... all things that Apple will no longer need in the future since the move to the Mac App Store. The Pro Audio development and management teams are still alive and kicking."

What version Common Sense do you use? - sometimes I feel I'm still using a Windows Millennium version!

I heard this rumor and Apple responded and said they are going to continue to keep logic around.
I guess we will wait and see.

They have given away all the additional content for free and now there is nothing to give away anymore.

I made my way through the headslapping pictures at gearslutz.com and found a current post that states the Logic team is "growing and growing". Sounds like bollocks to me, you don't have a team sitting around for four years because even if you had a great plan for a product at the beginning of that time- it will be out of date 4 years later in the software world.

It's like Tracktion and Acid I think, discontinued but still sold.

As far as assumptions and conjectures go, there are also people pretending to have access to reliable sources who assure them that Logic X will blow everything else out of the water.

There are people saying that the lack of new features in the latest updates are an indication that Logic is dying. But then, there are those who say that it's only an indication that Apple is indeed working on Logic X.

As far as I know, the staff isn't just sitting around - they continually release free updates. Senior Support Managers have been in contact w/ some users who've experienced an issue w/ the GUI, saying that they are working very hard on a fix, which they expected the latest patch to address. So at this point, the product is still supported and being worked on.

Logic 9 came out in 2009, so the whole team obviously hasn't been sitting around for 4 years. Again, that's distorting the facts to make things look a certain way.

As I pointed out before, Apple recently acquired Redmatica and was granted a patent for a polyphonic note detection. This may give a clue that they haven't abandoned their pro audio platform.

But really, the more I read that Pro Tools blog, the more I see blatant misinterpretation and sensationalism. As I said, the pro audio application specialists have NOTHING to do w/ software development and the reason why they were laid off is quite obvious.

So there you have it - bloggers quoting bloggers quoting bloggers twisting the truth. Mr. Owsinski didn't really impress me w/ this one.

    As far as blogs go:
    http://www.loopinsight.co...ed-its-pro-audio-team/

As far as anything Apple is concerned, I'd trust him before the Pro Tools bloggers...

I'm sure we'll be. ;)  These rumors have been floating around ever since Apple first bought eMagic.

I'd be seriously mad at them if they did drop Logic, and of course, we're always aware that there is a possibility, as w/ any other product.

Keep in mind that Apple is a transformed company. Once upon a time, it was a niche player with serious currency amongst the creative crowd. Musicians, graphic designers... Today they squarely compete in and live or die in the consumer space. In 2011, only 22 percent of their revenues came from laptops and desktops. A whopping 73% came from the combination of the ipod, ipad and iphone. You can bet that percentage has increased this year. With the competition in the consumer space heating up and the apple versus google versus microsoft versus amazon wars heating up, this is one battle that Apple cannot ever afford to lose. The old model of needing to sell professional software like Logic to drive hardware sales is deifinitely less of a priority today. I could understand why the company would divert resources towards the consumer space if needed. Not saying that the rumours are true. Just saying that could have an ounce of credibility if you consider Apple's competitive pressures. You can sense them having to play catch up in certain cases. The iPhone 5 was catch up versus Samsung. They launched the newest iPad on the heels of the iPad 3 because they saw the barrage of competition flooding the market. Anyway just my thought. I would be concerned if Microsoft was my DAW provider. Hard to imagine that niche products would be a priority for these big companies in this environment.

You're right.  A huge company like Apple could make that decision in a heartbeat.  And the question comes up every year during strategic planning.  I doesn't matter how many people are working hard at improvements.  Jobs killed off many products when he came back to apple so they could concetrate on only a few.  Not coming out with a release since 2009 is not a good sign.  But who knows, maybe they are working on the Ultamate DAW killer and we'll all be pleasantly surprised.

If you buy a PC thinking that you're making a "long term investment", we'd have to define what investment means. At least, unlike PCs, old Macs have a resale value.

Also depends on what your priorities are as a "professional". I can assure you that my professional entourage as a musician consists of Mac users. Exclusively. Their primary focus is recording and producing music, so their computer is usually just a tool, not an interest in itself.

    Avid isn't doing well.

MOTU finally decided to port DP to PC - which may be a sign of them struggling and seeking new revenue.

Steinberg has been sold a few times in the last decade.

Cakewalk first announced a partnership w/ Roland before it was bought by them.

    Sony acquired Sonic Foundry.

A few months ago, Bias, makers of one of the most renowned audio editors on Mac announced they were going out of business.

So whatever your software and platform of choice are, you just can't take things for granted.

An older MacBook like mine sells for $600 and more on eBay. Which means that for a few hundred $, I get a brand new one.

If I were you, I'd keep my "OMG" for the next time you run out of parts to upgrade on your machine, like, when you have to decide whether to toss that PC in the garbage bin or in a closet or sell it for $20... ;)
