Round robin/multi samples not always sounding the same

I'm working on a track which uses Kontakt to play back a library instrument which has multisampled layers. The problem is that there's one particular note which has more of a percussive attack in the sound at one of its velocity levels (which I like and want to use). Even though the note has a specific velocity entered, it doesn't always play back the same - sometimes it seems to play back at a different velocity which doesn't have this attack in its sample. In theory I thought this note would be exactly the same each time as its velocity doesn't change so it should be triggering the same sample each time. Could this be because it's a round robin sample and not always triggering the same sample each time?

Yes, that's possible. But it depends on the Kontakt library that you're using and the patch in that library that you're using.

But yes, round robin is usually an automatic feature and doesn't depend on velocity.

Thanks Scott, I think I've just narrowed it down to definitely being a RR issue.

If I keep clicking the same note in the PRV and then watching the sample names highlight in Kontakt's Group Editor window as it plays, it is cycling through different sample names each time the note is triggered.

There are 10 sample names for that particular note (each ending in "rr1", "rr2" etc.) and the first 4 of them don't have a percussive hit in the sound so I guess it's selecting which sample to play either at random or maybe dependent on how many other notes it's played since triggering.

I don't know how easy it is (if at all) to specify to Kontakt to play a specific sample from the RR group so I might just have to bounce that part to audio to make sure it's always the same.

I like the kind of 'human' feel that RRs can bring but it's like telling a drummer "No, play it like you just did!"

    Hey James,

Thanks very much! I appreciate it and I'm glad you're enjoying the book.

Yeah, that's definitely a round-robin patch that you're using. It's not usually done at random. Samples are usually cycled through from 1 through whatever number of samples are available. I'm not sure if Kontakt will let you choose which RR samples to use. I know other software products (like Vienna Instruments PRO) have that feature.

I don't know how Kontakt libraries are set up at all, but is it possible to temporarily movw the samples you don't want to a different folder for the duration of this project?
