Unrest - a piano improvisation
Hi, Been busy (as always) for the last while but I thought I'd share this 'raw' piano improvisation. Usually I have an idea, I sit at the piano, I play with it for a while, and then I record it. Then after a few days I revisit it, take it apart, fix it, discard the rubbish, and put it all back together again. I've seen a lot of pianists posting 'piano improvisations' on Soundcloud where it's straight 'stream of consciousness' playing and so I thought I'd post one of my untweaked, unpolished pieces - recorded straight from my digital piano into my DAW. http://soundcloud.com/purplerhapsody/unrest The hardest part was remembering the first part when I got to the end and wanted to revisit it! Hope you enjoy it. Cheers, Terry.

I'm liking it, and since the best I can do on a piano is a few triads with my right hand this feels polished to me. But you must know where the problems are and I'm sure you will fix them in time.

Wow--what cool transpositions from major to minor. Kept me guessing, which is good. Great playing, as always. I sometimes sit and just play for quite awhile, but I'm not sure I ever come up with something coherent that I'd actually want to record. Anyway, this shows off your inherent talent well. Bravo!

Terry, you have a great ear for melody, dynamics, and arrangement. Do you teach? If not, you should be teaching.

Liked this a lot Terry. For being raw I didn't hear much of a problem with it. Great job! This reminds me of Jim Brickman. The material is reflective and relaxing.

Thanks everyone for listening and commenting. bapu - thanks! Glad you liked it. Janet - well, I try not to be too boring ;-) I get so little time to play the piano these days that I often have a few ideas floating around my head that can be crystallised by sitting at the piano tinkling away. Lynn - I'd never have the nerve to think I could teach anybody anything. The idea of teaching children makes me cringe (not enough patience) and I know I have a large number of bad habits in both practical and theoretical music so I'm not a good role model like a teacher should be! Thanks for the compliment though! Starise - Glad you liked it! Not heard of Jim Brickman, I'll check him out. Thanks! Cheers, Terry.

truly an ace of a composition, Terry. kinda blown away in fact how you kept it free-form flowing throughout all your improvisations as if all was pre-planned. it is a sign of an accomplished and seasoned performer/artist to have both the creative freedom and simultaneous control of execution and phrasing in terms of creating mood-on-the-fly you have this Beethoven influence somewhere in your melodic soundscape and flair for composition which evokes emotion in the listener and making just passive listening an impossibility. very much shades of composition genius here. very kewl! excellent sounding recording to boot :) thank you for the listen -Daren

Thanks again to everyone who's listening and commenting, it's appreciated! Shad - Thanks! Phill - Glad you like it - and thanks for comments and likes on SC too! Jonas - Thanks! Daryl - Thanks - I'll try to give music a higher priority! (Unfortunately it doesn't make me any money so that has to come first!) Daren - Wow! What a bunch of compliments. I was surprised how it all flowed but I cringe at the places where you can hear I wasn't completely sure where to take it next (it's where the obvious wrong notes are!) Tim - Thanks! Cheers, Terry.
