Record latency

Fellas, Still having trouble with record latency. It is not a universal problem! Some projects behave properly, others exhibit enough latency when monitoring a record channel to make it unplayable. It's way out of sync. IF I don't monitor the record channel and just listen to the rest of the playback while recording the audio IS in proper sync when I go back and listen on playback to the newly recorded clip. Somewhere there's a preference or button I don't grasp yet. Point me in the right direct. PT

First give us your system and soundcard specs, and tell us what driver mode you are using and what are your latency settings. It might be useful to know what version of SONAR you're using, too.

The differences between projects can simply be due to different VSTs used. Some take more CPU power and require more RAM. Do you operate with both MIDI ans audio?

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

Make sure that Perfect Space and other latency inducing effects aren't on the project.

The other latency culprits are the LP64 Multiband and LP64Q, and the prochannel concrete limiter.

AT, There are, in fact, latency inducing plug ins on the project. They are associated with different mix busses than the one through which I'm recording. (There's some schmootz on the vocals) Is it because of the automatic delay compensation that "fixes" timing of everything else to account for the schmootz lag that when I go to record...I'm hearing the lag? Would one need to bypass or remove the schmootz (channel tools) from the subgroup to get rid of its associated delay compensation? If I were over at the studio I would just try it but it is a ways away. Thanks PT

You can click the PDC (Plugin Delay Compensation) Override button in the mix module of the control bar (new X2 shortcut Shift-E) to temporarily override delay compensation on input-monitored tracks, but only if the PDC-inducing FX are not on those tracks.

Ideally you want to finish tracking before bringing these plugs into the project. They're primarily intended for the mixing/mastering stages. Once they're in the project, most will trigger delay compensation even when they're disabled, 'cause SONAR has to be prepared for you to re-enable them on the fly without glitching.

    ^^^ This!

As a workaround, if ever I feel the need to add another part to a song that's partially mixed, I just click the Global Fx button to turn all Fx off, record the part, then turn Fx back on again.

    Ah ha......

So maybe that's why when i'm recording guitar using Amplitube 3 it seems out of time on play back.

I've been playing in bands and live to backing tracks for years so feel I have a good sense of timing but when recording with Sonar I'm often out. Not much just that little bit. Yet when recording in Ampltiube I'm bang on the money.

I started turning the guitar channel down and just listening to the driect signal from the Saffire Pro 40 but of course I was then losing the feel and tone of the guitar and not performing as well.

Must get into habit of getting tracking done first instead of mixing as I go. By the time I've got to recording guitars I've got pro channel all over the drums, bass and busses, some verbs / delays and multiband on the master.

I don't get any glitches but I guess some or all of these are affecting the PDC and getting my recordings out of sync???

    That sound possible?

    Thanks

Yep, sounds entirely plausible to me

And luckily it's pretty easy to check out

As suggested by a few of you the latency introduced because of the plugins I was using caused the timing issues. Hitting the PDC button got rid of my issue. Thanks!
