Routers are most definitely bad magic.

I'm very meticulous about keeping my passwords in order but I was setting this stupid thing up from scratch. The friggen' cable guys were supposed to leave a wireless modem which they did not so I had to scrounge a router until they get their BLEEP together. I had actually set this one up before but I really don't know what the problem was this time. After spending a bunch of time on the phone with the ISP and then a nice young man in India (who was initially pulling some data mining crap) I realized that the answers were buried deep within the router's manual. Very... VERY annoying. At least I can now fall asleep watching documentaries on youtube again. My brain refuses to shut off at night without them.

Is the router sorry? Seems there's a lot of that going around lately.

@sharke... I actually made a point of asking the ISP to leave a bleeping wireless modem here and now they are making me wait a couple weeks. I mean... they won't even just mail me one. Jerks. However this router seems to be working fabulously now so I might just tell them to get bent and they'll not be getting the rental fee on the new modem. Service chick the other day was acting all put out that I was asking about it too and I was being sweet as honey as usual. @bapu... I forgave it. It's giving me some sweet speed... and I'm also realizing that I was right in my assumption that some arse was stealing my bandwidth in my old place despite many MANY snotty denials. However... still many trials ahead. A lot of repairs that were promised on the new room were half assed or not done at all. Gotta sort that out now. What a werld... what a werld.

I was having router issues... freezing up several times a day. The tech support folks told me the router was too old and that was the likely cause of the issues.... they could send me a new one.... but this one came with a monthly rental fee. I went to Staples and bought a combo wireless wi-fi router and installed it myself. A call to the ISP got me the ADSL VPI & VCI numbber so it could decode the CenturyLink DSL.... and waaa laa I was back on the net. But...... that's not the end of the story.... I have an IP camera which I can view on my LAN but also wanted to try to port forward it so I can view off site as well..... what a pain. I set up the port forwarding and now my Netflix won't connect with it's wi-fi connection. So today... one of my projects is to default the router and start over.... or at least try to figure out how to get the Netflix working again.... I may just cut the crap and wire it to the switch.... and not mess with the wireless aspect.

After years of being unreasonably cheap, I succumbed about a month ago to the inevitable and bought a more expensive router. Since then, I've had better speed, no dropped connections, and no more calls from annoyed family members complaining that I had broken the Internet. I also forwarded my phone to a call center in Bangalore.

UbiquitousBubba After years of being unreasonably cheap, I succumbed about a month ago to the inevitable and bought a more expensive router. Since then, I've had better speed, no dropped connections ... Same here. They are making them more and more idiot proof all the time. I haven't even been in to the RUI since I got mine a couple months ago. They randomly generate passwords now (It's not the standard 'admin' anymore, at least not on the one I got.) The password was printed on a sticker on the bottom of the router, well packed and hidden so it couldn't be seen until you opened the box. The new router I got is awesome. It has a USB port that you can plug any USB device in to. I hooked up my 500GB External Drive and I stream all my music and vids over my WiFi directly off that shared USB drive. It's like having an instant server without all the network hassles. Works like a charm. I can access all my stuff via my cell, laptop, DAW, and TV through my PS3 and my Blu Ra player's WiFi. Took seconds to set up. Plus I have Vonage hooked up as well. I can stream in HD from Amazon Prime, talk on the phone, and surf the web on my cell, all wirelessly at the same time. Never had so much as a hiccup, dropout, or slowdown. A big part of that is my ISP of course, but considering all the data that's flying through the router to multiple devices, and the amount of data, it's pretty amazing.

Hi, They are cheap enough these days ... up until 2 to 3 years ago, you had to fiddle with these to get them working ... and it was a big pain in the wazoo and bapu! Today, bless his soul, the stuff is much easier and it IS plug and play ... I got a nice $90 dollar big G router ... and it was plug and play and I have not had a single issue with it in the year I have had it. Get rid of that old stuff! Even folks that know these days do not deal with those things anymore!

I rent our wireless router. Now, when a lightning storm comes I can surf the net on my battery laptop and if the router gets zapped as it has 3x already I just pack it up drive in to the store front in town and they hand me a fresh one no questions asked. It seems like the easiest way to always have the latest greatest router. :-)
