I always plan to go to bed at 1am but it's about that time that I discover a Great New Thing to do that keeps me up till 3am and beyond. Then I curse the Great New Thing in the morning when it dawns on me that yet again, I have not had nearly enough sleep.

Up until about 6 months ago for years I could NOT get to sleep until 5-6 am at the earliest and because of my poor health if I don't get 8-10 hours of sleep I feel like I'm dying. It was horrible because I had so much that NEEDED to get done during daylight hours. After a forced a bunch of issues and a few issues self resolved I'm now up at 8-9 in the morning and usually zonked out by 1 am.

Insomnia is hell when you've got stuff to do. Glad at least that one nightmare is over.

One thing I simply cannot do anymore is to have an unbroken night's sleep.

Something always wakes me up - bladder, thirst, sweats, sometimes 3/4/5 times a night.

By the time the alarm goes off I'm exhausted

Yet - on the weekend I'll wake at 6:30 with no alarm and feel fresh as a daisy.

    Bloody psychosomatics!!!

Hey, Jonesey... have you tried some of the herbal sleep aid mixtures? I used to use one years ago that had valerian root, St. John's wort and some other crap in it. Not as powerful as a chemical sleeping aid but it helped. Also vitamin D supplements can make a pretty big difference especially if you don't get a lot of sun... and seeing as how you are a computer dude in "sunny" England I'm going to venture a guess that you don't. You could also try light therapy. To me that light stuff sounds all hocus pocusy but apparently all the studies point to it being beneficial. Cheers.

Valerian works but it sometimes gives me a headache in the morning. I have found melatonin to be more effective. There is also a natural supplement called GABA which is good at stopping the mind from racing when you're trying to get to sleep.

Never tried melatonin but heard it works great.

I just remembered a messed up dream I had last night. I was stuck unable to move on a matress in some dingy room and people were outside the door trying to get in to mess me up. I tried to yell out for help but could only get out a groaning "hwww... hmmmuuu". I think I might have actually been saying that out loud in reality. eep. Gotta calm down. Past week has been hard.

I wouldn't wish consciousness on anyone.  It's while sleeping that my mind is finally free of the monotony, drudgery, open apologies, and utter horror of consciousness.  I say, "Let it run free!  Maybe this time, it will escape and we'll never have to go through that nonsense again!"

I've gotten old before my time

I hear that, man. I'm only in my 30's but I might as well be in my 70's. Stupid life.

Indeed. What's even crappier is all this crap started almost a decade ago. Just when I was starting to really live. Oh well. Got my memories. If I can make a decent chunk of cash somehow I might be able to create some more.

One thing I simply cannot do anymore is to have an unbroken night's sleep.

Something always wakes me up - bladder, thirst, sweats, sometimes 3/4/5 times a night.

By the time the alarm goes off I'm exhausted
I have severe sleep apnea and what you are describing is what I used to go through. Plus I'd get really f'd headaches, and I got to the point to where I couldn't even make it to work without pulling off at a highway rest area and taking a quick nap.

It finally took it's toll on me about 12 years ago and I have to be hooked up to a breathing machine every night now. Sounds like a hassle, but I refuse to sleep without it now. I take it on vacations or wherever I have to travel.

When I don't use it now, I'm pretty much worthless for days, even after I start using it again.

You should get that checked out ...

We just got a new bed and I've been sleeping really well without any back pain. We got one of those gel beds that forms to your body. This one draws the heat away from your body and dissipates it in to the mattress as well. They said it's some kind of material designed and used by NASA. It's really amazing, you can feel your body heat being drawn away from you and it keeps you cool.

I used to be an insomniac. But since I got my sleep apnea under control, and this new mattress, I look forward to going to bed. The wife has her alarm set for 5:30am, and without fail, I get up a couple minutes before it goes off every morning. We're in bed by 9:30 - 10pm every night. We usually fall asleep watching TV around 8:30 - 9 then get up and go to bed.

When I'm doing my music though, I lose track of time and stay up well in to the wee hours, and I pay for it the next day. :(

Some great info on this thread lads!!

I remember when they said to me "you need less sleep the older you get"

What they didn't say was, "yeah, you'll get 6/7 hours solid sleep but not in one go - you'll want to nap throughout the day" <doh>

Lunchtimes/early afternoon are an absolute killer - I regularly nap for about 20 minutes at my desk (yeah I'm on a computer all day at work as well)

I got up at 3:00 AM today. Not so much insomnia as sciatica.

I have endless trouble getting to sleep, but if I lie in a hot bath, I'm gone in seconds. Maybe I should consider an amphibian life.
