I used to mod the MXL FET mics when they first started coming over.. but all we were doing was swapping out the dirt cheap small electronic components for top of line ones.
We thought it helped... but we were just having fun.
I am in the process of building a cheap kit tube mic... but it seems like it would need a new capsule and transformer before I'll be using it as a mic... and I'm not up for adding that expense.
I don't think you can build a nice mic for less than you can buy it, but if you do want to diy assemble a nice mic the cheapest way to get the metal work is too buy a cheap mic.
The only sensible reason, in my opinion, to mod a mic is "just because".
I am doing it because I already have mics that I can trust and so it's just time for me to exercise some curiosity.
Some folks spend up to $2000 making faithful copies of the u47 by sourcing kit bodies and buying all the right parts... the real ones sell for $5,000 - $10,000 so maybe they are saving money... it's hard to say. For $2k you can get a pretty nice brand new factory mic. :-)
I think "just because" is a good reason.
Anyways...
best regards,
mike
