Sample Drive-Audio Drive laptop?
OK-Got my Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 today. I have an Asus N56VM-8GB Ram\HD Partioned C:\OS 279GB\ D:Data 400GB (came like that) I have diabled speedstep, all startup crap etc. X2 Prod installed on C:OS partition. I have an external 1TB USB 3.0 HD partitioned. I put all samples (I have lots of softsynths) on partition E:\500GB and F:\ is 500GB. So, on my desktop daw I have 3 int HDs so it was easy to figure what went where. I have the laptop partitions named\mapped with same letter as deshtop daw, just in case. So where do I put my projects with audio files? Better on D:\ which is idata nternal partition on laptop or on the second partition on the ext HD which has the samples on one of the oartions? Sorry for the confusing post Thanks

stratman: are you sure you can fit 2 drives in that unit ? there are 4 usb 3 ports you might have to try them to see how x2 performs !!

Do the synths that use the samples stream from disk or load samples into memory? If the synths do not stream samples from disk then where the samples are located would not matter and the audio projects might perform better on the external drive.

I am toying with the idea of removing the int DVD drive ()I have 2 external ones if need be) and installing a SSD there. I already bought the carrier\carriage for it. I asked asus if I could buy a service manual They said no-they don't want their customers messing with the laptops? This is the last time I buy an Asuslaptop. I love their motherboards, been using them for many ions. But how stupid-it's my laptop. I'm sure ican get it apart to install the SSD but it waould have been nice to have the manual

If the synths do not stream samples from disk then where the samples are located would not matter and the audio projects might perform better on the external drive. Hmm-Well Kontakt 5 is my major one and Steven Slate Drums Platinum 4.0. Kontakt I believe you can choose, right? SSDrums I'm not sure. But I only have 8GB of memory. I posted in another thread that now my main objective was to get this going for a first gig in jeeezzzz, a zillion years at a company party-one man type crap. So I was going to use all audio files. I would love to be able to use the projects with the soft synths also. But not essential. It's a **** gig, but more pride-it's where I work and their are 300 employees for the xmas party. They have a dj alsdo-30 minutes of him and 30 minutes of me for about 4 hours. That's why I bought and received today the focusrite scarlett 8i6. I use a mackie vlz3, axeFXII audix om5 mic and various Strats. Also have 2 QSC K10's-perfect for this size room and the crowd. Stage is 4 feet higher than the floor and huge. There is a house system but no one to run it. I may mic a K10, maybe not. But I am confused now as to where to put what. The projects (67GB's worth are already on the external and so are the samples-seperate partitions. So I need to drag one to the Data partition on the internal data drive so maybe I should try one way. The samples are a lot more than the 67GB projects.

Well got it working buy I am very confused-I am so used to the Layla 3G, the Scarlett 8i6 is killing me. Sounds good but the mix controller is confusing(well confusing me. Rigtht now since I only have 6 days, I would like the scarlett just to be an audio interface for the audio. Didn't think I'd have to read the user manual. I may wind up just using the scarlett for midi and using my SC88-vl like the old days. Wonderful

OK-Read a little bit- the mixer software is a bit elaborte but I have gotten to the point where I have 4 seperate outs and the audio only projets sound very good for this gig anyway. Now just have to arrange about 20 or so for audio only with the proper outs and I'll be good to go. So mostly computer editing. The sound is nice but don't know if it's the laptop or the scarlett but the layla3G does sound better. Could be the laptop, but I think it's the layla3G drivers and unit itself. But the Scarlett 8i6 sounds nice and will suit me fine. Thanks for putting up with my rants and freaking out-I am a bit hi strung. The jungle in Viet nam will do that :-) I will post back with progress and the gig of course
