Had a family weekend in the woods...

I headed up to Virginia to see my Mom.... it was her birthday weekend she claims to be 94, but I know she's 96... it's our little secret.

My sister planned a bird hunt so she and I and her son (my nephew) Joe went shooting some ring neck pheasant. It was certainly a beautiful day.... cool and foggy in the early morning which let the dogs pick up the scent ....watching them work and point the birds was a thing of beauty..... but by the middle of the morning the sun was peaking through the fog and the day warmed up nicely. We each bagged several birds... 13 between us all.... the dogs actually nailed a few of them when they were too slow in flushing out of the weeds.

In case you are wondering.... Belgium Browning A-5 12 gauge auto. Yeah... it's sweet. Our guide was drooling over it.  When he saw it he said WOW! that looks like...and my sister finished the sentence for him...

After hunting all morning, we went home, grabbed the bow and a crossbow  my sister gave to me as a gift (175 lb recurve with laser dot sight)   and headed out to the area where she and her husband deer hunt.... 5 minutes from her house. I took a few shots with her deer hunting bow and managed a very tight group ....see the picture below....

we all had a very nice family weekend.... this will very likely be an annual event for the family....

Yup, I'd say that was pretty tight.

A dog on a bird is an amazing thing to watch.  It's been a couple of years since I have been back home on the farm to hunt some ring necks, Herb. I hope to make it back next fall.

You can't even see the 1st one, the 2nd one pushed it out the other side of the crate, we can only see the 2nd and 3rd ones.
