I think the whole "safest way to fly" figures are probably skewed quite a bit by the safety record of commercial flights. The accident rate seems to be pretty high when it comes to private aircraft. Just look at all of the musicians over the years who have died in plane/helicopter crashes, as opposed to car crashes: John Denver, Bill Chase & band, Stevie Ray, Randy Rhoads, Lynard Skynard members, Jim Croce, Otis Redding, Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly, Glenn Miller, Aaliyah....etc etc. And very few of them on commercial flights.
If you want safe flying then you have to go with the big airlines (preferably not Russian) who spend a lot of money on safety and maintenance and who have strict standards. The number of private airplanes that come down is startling, especially when you consider how few they are in number compared to cars. I hear of at least 2 or 3 in the New York/New Jersey area every week.
