Press Record, no record happens

Been having this problem for awhile can't figure it out.  When  recording a punch in/punch out in midi, some time pressing record just does not do anything. I have tried everything I can think of.  When I shut down Sonar and restart, then it works again.  Anybody else have this problem?

Windows 7
Sonar 8.5

This is so basic I hate to even type it out,

You are arming the track? Then you hit the "R" on the keyboard?  ( or the icon in the toolbar)

Most definitely.  Even if I unarm the track, and arm a different midi track it will still not record unless I shut down and restart.  It is like the record function completely shuts down unless I restart.

So what your saying is that all is set and the Track level meter moves when you hit your keyboard/ controller.
You hear the active VST play.
You hit "R" the songs starts,
Your hear everything that is already recorded. , the red lights are all on, both the track and the toolbar... yet nothing ( new MIDI DATA)  gets recorded to the track??.

You mentioned you were punching in.

Can you record a new track?

Is it just this one track you cannot record too?

    Thanks for trying to help.

The active VST is armed and I can hear it, it is receiving signal.  But when I hit R nothing happens. The song does not start.
I can hit play and the song plays everything already recorded.

Don't know about recording to a brand new track; I will have to try that next time I get hung up.  But I have tried to unarm the first track that is giving me trouble, and then arm a different existing midi track, press R and nothing happens. Until I restart Sonar.

I should also mention this problem only happens with midi tracks

The only thing I can think of is a toggle to protect a track from being recorded, but I am unaware that such a feature exists. I just looked and also checked the help files.

    Other long shots would be
Hard drive needs maintenance- defrag or to full.
Audio engine stops due to memory or driver issues.
You don't mention any audio/ MIDI interface
    Which drivers are you using?
