X2 Prod and A-Pro 500
Help please - Using X2 Prod with A-Pro and VS-100. I get the transport functions on both the VS and A-Pro but cannot get any other rotaries or sliders to work on the A-Pro as a control surface. I have watched various you tube videos of guys simply clicking on the relevant soft synth or plug-in and instantly being able to control from the A-Pro. No matter what I do I cannot get this working. All settings in preferences are correct. Any ideas......... In addition I use my old Clavinova as a master keyboard going into the A-pro midi in. The sustain pedal was working fine and working within Sonar. The other day the A-Pro did a factory reset and now the sustain pedal does not work regardless of what I do within the A-Pro or Sonar. Local tech support say the A-Pro is supposed to be fun and easy to use, I have had nothing but complete frustration with it and at this stage would gladly replace it. If you can help with either thanks in advance. Cheers, Phil

You need to use ACT. This the way X2 works with MIDI controllers that are not a control surface. You can find out more about ACT in the help file and the reference manual.

I believe there are pre-configured templates for your board, if memory serves. Bob Bone

If not, you can create your own control surface layout with ACT. I did that for my sliders and such with my Axiom 61 Pro. Bob Bone

Bob if memory serves the A Pro is an ACT controller with an ACT button on it. I could be wrong but it is/was a Cakewalk product that is now from Roland. And yes it should be supported.

I have the templates installed, no difference. A-Pro certainly does have ACT but it makes no difference if on or not. Re-installed all drivers, no difference. The strange part is that the transport works so the midi data is being transferred it just will not recognise any other controls, rotaries or sliders. Cheers, Phil

☄ Helpful
There's plenty of disinformation on the internet, ACT works very nicely, this is how I got my A-300 to work. a) Visit Rolands US site and flash update the firmware. b) These instructions (PDF of Controlling SONAR or SONAR LE from the A-PRO Series), follow carefully... c) Right click on X2 those faders you want to control can't remember the exact option not in front of me, MIDI controller learn or something.... you'll figure it. Cheers.

ps I tried to find the URL for the firmware update. I can't, I think Roland has buried it... If you can't find it try contacting Roland. The firmware update is nice to have but not essential anyway.

Alex, I found the latest firmware update which is the same as already installed, however thinking about it no harm can come from re-installing firmware and drivers. All settings in preferences etc correct but when I go to 'learn act' it does not recognise the changes. Perhaps the firmware has become corrupt, worth a try as cannot get anymore frustrated than already. Cheers, Phil

Reflashing firmware will probably do nothing. Try removing drivers and reboot and see if it works without them (what is supplied with Windows). Otherwise latest drivers from Rolands site.. Log an issue with Roland otherwise. NB Good idea to update your footer like mine, I don't know what version of Windows and whether you are running 64/32 bit Windows and/or Sonar. Also keep your "master keyboard" switched off for now.

Just wanted to note that I have the A-PRO 800 working fine alongside several other controllers (VS-100, VS-700C, MCU), all switched on at same time. I could move sliders on the A-PRO (which I rarely do, though) and have my motorized faders on the other devices following ... You need to make sure that the A-PRO is registered in Sonar as a Control Surface (Preferences/MIDI/Control Surfaces) using "A-PRO" as the controller type. Also, make sure you select the proper Input and Output Port for the A-PRO. I believe it is the A-PRO 1 for Input and A-PRO 2 for output. This is what caused me problems initially because these ports come labelled as A-PRO 1 and A-PRO 2 and I always forgot which one was the right one (and everytime you run Sonar with the A-PRO switched OFF, Sonar forgets the settings). So use "friendly names" like "A-PRO CTRL" for the right I/O ports and you'll always know which one to set it to.

1) Alex, updated info should be below I hope (sorry, new to this forum). 2) FreeFlyBertl - I originally had the same confusion in preferences with A-Pro, A-Pro 1 and A-Pro 2 input and output however all preference settings are correct. Thanks for all your help and suggestions, unfortunately it looks like waiting to hear from CW (or Roland Australia). I have seen all the video's and tutorials on CW's site and there is absolutely no way that I can get the A-Pro to work like that!! Wishing season greeting's to all. Be safe over the holiday period :)

USB midi out from A-Pro straight to DAW. The non USB midi is my Clavinova connected via the A-pro Din midi in (which in preferences is A-Pro midi in). Having the Clavinova disconnected makes no difference.

Update - I now have both A-pro control and midi working properly. Further bonus my sustain pedal now works. After many frustrating hours! I found in preferences the A-pro 1 and 2 were selected correctly however I also had A-pro midi in selected and this was causing my problems. Thanks to all for your time and suggestions.
