Essentials X1/X2 Tutorials
Hi, I am a total noob (never used DAW before) and just joined. I just bought Essential X1 with a free upgrade to X2 before Dec 31st. The first thing I did was search for "tutorials" and there was plenty of mention but I could not find any links to these tutorials. Where are they please? Or do they mean the paid video tutorials? Also If I buy the video tutes will they still be helpful for the basic Essential version? And lastly, does anyone know of a chart where I can see at a glance what Producer, Studio and Essential inlcudes, and what the differences are? thanks a lot

Thanks Rabeach and Scook. Thanks Bristol_Jonesy, I have changed to Chrome for this site only (don't like how it increases the size of pics as well as text). Garrigus, thanks. Your videos are very good, but I only saw a bit. Is there a way to make them full screen please? Fast BikerBoy, thank you. Your videos are excellent. Subscribed! Thanks guys for all your help. Can't wait to get started.

CoffeeTime Garrigus, thanks. Your videos are very good, but I only saw a bit. Is there a way to make them full screen please? Hi CoffeeTime, Those online videos are already full size. They don't get any larger. What about them are you not able to see? They are produced in such a way as to zoom in on the appropriate parts of the screen when necessary, so you should be able to see all the actions being described. Best, Scott -- Scott R. it came today! and I registered and got a reg number and everything. But when I went to the upgrade page I got this message: I was expecting it to have a box where you put your serial number or reg number in. But it didn't, so it seems the upgrade is reliant on support's input. I only have 2 days to upgrade. As I tried to upgrade before the Dec 31, do you think they will backdate the offer if support does not get back to me in time? thanks ps: hope you all had an amazing christmas btw!!

It takes time for the free upgrade to process. Since you registered before the year end you will get the free upgrade. You do not have to do anything other than register your X1. The free upgrade will appear in your store account.

I didn't mention that my friend installed a 30 day trial of Sonar producer 8.5 a year ago. I could never get it to work at all, so I never used it. Before installing the new X1 Essential version yesterday, I deleted all the existing Cakewalk files - or so I thought. I have Windows 7 64 bit. I deleted the folders from My Documents and from Program Files(86) But now I see that there are lots of Cakewalk files and folders in C/Cakewalk Content and C/Cakewalk Projects. I have Cakewalk open although no MIDI device connected, and have only just noticed that as well as folders originally being in "Program Files (86)" there are also folders in "Program Files" dated 2011. I tried to delete the whole Cakewalk folder from Program Files but it won't allow me to, saying a program is using them. I can only think that this must mean the newly installed Sonar X1 is attempting to use the old files. Does this mean I should put all the old files and folders back where they were? (I backed up all the old files and folders on an external hard drive as there were lots of cool instrument wav files in them.) And will it be bad if I delete the old Cakewalk folder from "Program Files" while Sonar is not in use? (they are all dated 2011, so I am certain they are the old files). thanks a lot

All versions of SONAR share files and leaving a prior version installed does not affect the current version. As with many applications, the uninstall process does not completely remove all evidence of a SONAR installation. The "Cakewalk Projects" directory is where the songs you create are stored, the uninstall process will never remove that. "Cakewalk Content" contains version specific and nonspecific data so parts of it may be left too.
As far as finding files in "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk" and "C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk", Cakewalk can install files in both locations depending on what you choose to install. Full installations of 64bit versions of SONAR will use both locations. Some of those files are shared by versions of SONAR. You do not say what date you are reading on the files. X1 will show files with modified dates back through at least 2009.
At this time you might just leave the bits of 8.5 alone, they won't hurt anything. They are not taking up much space.
It might be a good idea to add your PC hardware and the version of SONAR you are running in your .sig. Many forum users find it useful when trying to help you.

That's a good start. You might want to add whether you are running 32bit or 64bit version of X1 Essential if you are running one or the other. Cannot assume it from the OS. If you are running both that is OK too. Did you get the links to X2 in your store account? If not, you may want to send email to http://www.cakewalk.com/About/csr.asp

Hi, Thanks. I don't know what version of software (64 or 32 bit) I thought during the install process it matched to your OS. I looked in the Help > About Sonar, but it doesn't say which version. Regarding Support: They just sent me to the shopping cart page!! I have already been there - that's where the problem occurs (see pic above) they don't read emails properly! So I'm left going round in circles.

You could post in the E-Store forum, include the screenshot from message 16 and mention your email attempts. That forum is monitored by Customer Support. WRT the SONAR version, in the "About" screen above the "Licensed To" there should be a line that shows the build number. The end of the build line will show x64 for 64bit versions. On a 64bit OS, the installer should give you an option to install the 32 or 64bit version.

Hi Scook, thanks I will post there too. It just says Sonar X1 Essential (build 185) I'm 99% certain I wasn't given the 32/64 bit options during installation. The only option I remember, was choosing the basic install over the custom one. Maybe the custom one included 32 and 64 bit options? If so, I guess that means 32 bit version is the basic version

Yes, 32 bit. The 32bit SONAR X1 Essentials install in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\SONAR X1 Essentials" on a 64bit OS. FYI, it appears that you are not the only one that is having to wait for their X2 upgrade. Given the holiday it will probably be tomorrow before it gets fixed.
