First tune I've posted here...

LOL, the last time I ever posted a link to one of my tunes was when I was an active member at Artistlaunch and before that at mp3.com

Not done much since them days to be honest, mainly due to those creative juices drying up. In an effort to get things going again I've upgraded to X1, then X2 and bought a load of new plug-ins. Some times that helps to get things going again. Some times...

Anyway, about the tune. My solo stuff is purely electronic, although I do play guitar, and sometimes I do add a bit of guitar into my works. It's not a dance tune, or in the slightest bit "pop," I don't think. I just class it as "electronic." It is a heavy eleven minutes long and is as boring as hell, but it is what I love doing.

I've just signed up at SoundCloud so I thought I'd post that link. Never used it before and I couldn't see any advice on preferred bit rate, so I went for 320kbps. No doubt this will put some peeps off, but for most, nowadays, 320kbps is a walk in the park. 128kbps is so old fashioned don't you think?

Okay, link time:-

https://soundcloud.com/synkrotron/cont-011-working-title

Not too worried about comments and stuff, although any criticism is always welcomed. I just wanted to share really.

thanks

andy

Hey Synkrotron. I really liked this track. It is very well done and I really don't have any criticisms at all. But upon reading that your creative juices had dried up, I thought that I really should ask if you've heard the soundtrack to the game Uplink: Hacker elite. It's quite an old game, but the soundtrack is great, and it is all very reminiscent of your track. You should check it out to see if it gets your juices flowing again. Anyway, really liked the track, well done. Ali

Whoa, dude. Not sure how you did it but that completely filled up my room with crisp, clear, almost "surround" sound through my crummy laptop speakers. Seriously I didn't think it was possible for these things to pump that kind of clarity out and I've had them for YEARS.

Anyway the track itself is slick. Kind of all over the place stylistically (in a good way). The first theme brought me back to listening to Skinny Puppy in the old goth bars at 2am then some kind of Floydish thing, then freaky prog into far out almost new agey ambient type stuff.

Nutty, bro. Definitely cool. Glad you posted it.

    Cheers.

Well, I am glad you did. Its a cool piece of old school electronica al la Jean Michele Jarre.

Wow! I honestly didn't expect that. Not when there is so much excellent traditionally played and recorded music here. From real musicians too with so much more talent than I'll ever have. So, I'm humbled.

@Ali - Thanks for listening. Looking at your extensive SoundCloud collection, and on playing the first track there, it appears you create electronic stuff yourself, although I should listen to more just to make sure of that. I notice you've done an FSOL cover. FSOL are a band close to what I would like to do, but struggle. They've done some great stuff in the past, most notably for me Lifeforms. I'll check out that game thing... you're not the first one to mention computer games when it comes to my "music."

@Beep - LOL dood, I'm so glad you dropped by. I've been digging your stuff for a couple of months now so I know what you do, and I was wondering what on earth you would think of my MIDI stuff. Sounds like you found it okay ;). You're right, it does jump around that track, and I could have made it last even longer, but I decided to keep it "short" hahaha. Thanks loads for listening.

@CLEAN - Thanks for spending some time listening to my tune and I'm glad you dig it :)

@foxwolfen - Thanks to you too, and to the reference to JMJ. That's so kind.

And thanks to anyone else who may of given it a chance. It's nice to know that stuff you do is getting a little bit of attention every now and then *big grin*

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QliQ0livbeQ There you go, it's the entire Uplink soundtrack in one Youtube video (not uploaded by me, I just found it.) When I heard your music I thought of this straight away. In fact it was by the far the best thing about the game. Anyway I'm not saying that your music is only computer game music, as I would listen to it just anyway. It just so happens that the Uplink music is from a game. Oh and also, I agree with Beepster, how in the world have you made everything sound so beautifully clear!

Thanks again Ali. I've got the youtube thing playing. It's a compilation of different artists lasting forty odd minutes I see. I obviously need to listen through it and then look up those artists. I've found Skaven on SoundCloud already. Some of the stuff sounds very Tangerine Dream, from their mid nineties era.

As for your question on how I've made it so clear... got me there young man, and I ain't got a clue. So I can't take credit and it was just an accident. Let's hope I can do the same again lol.

@Starise - Thanks for taking time to listen, I appreciate it. And you upload 24bit WAV's? Blimey, that must take up so much time and space. But I notice that SoundCloud limit you by song time and not file size, so that's fine I guess.

@twisted6s - Thanks to you too. We cross posted so I'm editing this to add my thanks here instead of a new post.

I've got to say that I've had a much greater response here than I thought.

    Thanks again peeps :)

Well it was very skillfully done so the praise is well deserved. Seriously man, I cannot believe how powerful and clean the sound came through on my puny little speakers.

I'd definitely be into doing a collab if you're still interested. I could see us doing some intense industrial type stuff. I've been pretty limited to doing traditional instrument based stuff but have always wanted to play around with digital noise. Just gotta get my shiz together around here a little more first though.

Cheers, dude. You should post more of your stuff. I for one would be interested in hearing it and maybe learning how you go about things.

Thanks Daryl. That's some praise since the tune is eleven minutes long lol and I thank you for sticking with it. I suppose it helps that it is broken down into bite sized chunks though. Thanks for listening :-)

Beep, dood, yeah, looking forward to that collab. Perhaps in the new year sometime? I like the sound of your proposal and it'll help me move away from what I call "happy music." I've got an awful admission that I hate using the black notes on me keyboard, except for an occasional flattened seventh here and there haha. And I don't know about you but I'm still getting my head around X2 at the moment too.

Heh. Cool, man. Yeah, I'm really swamped right now but we'll get it going. As far as the black keys that's what the transpose functions are for. I know I'll be using that a lot when I start going all keyboard nerd on stuff. ;-p

Actually very much looking forward to hooking up my original DX-7 now that I have room to set it up. However I've been told I need to do a bunch of fiddle faddle to make it play nice with standard MIDI as it was built before the industry agreed on the set rules. I do however have my little Oxygen 25 too so if I get too annoyed I can mess with that and the internal sounds on the Yammie are still pretty epic too as well as the stuff on the data cartridges I snagged... two of which are the writable kind loaded with stuff some unknown lunatic programmed at some point in time.

So much fun to be had. Cheers.

DX-7... LOL, I remember when they came out dood haha. I used to spend a lot of time in my local music store, drooling over the Moogs, Korgs and Rolands. They had what was an awesome synth at the time, a Jupiter 8, and I could walk up to that monster and instantly get the sound I wanted out of it, no problemo.

When the DX-7 came out, I said "what on earth is that?" and was told it was one of them new FM synths. Total lack of turny knobs had me well stumped and I tried for twenty minutes to get some decent sounds out of it. Walked away in disgust and swore never to get an FM synth, ever LOL.

I was so relieved when they started making all them newfangled virtual analogue things. I knew where I was again. Such a relief haha.

You're right though, sounds can be epic, and certainly sit there in the history of electronic music. I just can't do with me knobs...

Yeah, I'm not even sure what to do with the thing beyond just loading the patches (not even sure if that's the right term... lol) and hammering away on it. It's got some crazy chart screenprinted on it that supposedly details how the FM stuff works but I've got the manual somewhere (that I printed out from the web) which is likely a little more insightful. Just makes me curious what the heck this thing does. The old Moog type stuff intrigues me too but I'll have to settle for the virtual stuff that came with Sonar for now. I've got more than enough gizmos and doodads to keep me busy for a couple lifetimes I think now. ;-)

I listened to this yesterday, but didn't have time to comment by the time it finished ;)  I don't think I've ever made it to the end of a track this long on here before, so there's a compliment in itself I guess.

I only listened on lappy speakers, so can't say much about the mix other than that it came across very well all things considered. I think you might need to work on your promo skills a little - saying it's "as boring as hell" probably isn't the ideal introduction  ;) - I nearly decided not to bother, but then maybe you just employed some clever reverse psychology, because I did listen and I'm glad I did. Hints of JMJ, which can only be good. If you're into this kind of stuff and you don't have it already, you need to get Omnisphere - just made for this style and if that doesn't inspire something in you, nothing ever will. Absoultely awesome synth !

Anyway, enjoyed the tune - hopefully you'll come up with something else soon, which I look forward to hearing.  Sometimes when inspiration deserts me, I just do a couple of covers of tunes I like and the deconsruction of them, then learning how they are put together usually sparks off an idea or two. If it doesn't, then it's still good mixing / production practice (of which I need plenty, lol !)

Very cool! Just the kind of music I wish I could make, but it just doesn't seem to want to happen for me. The bits of Vangelis, JMJ and Tangerine Dream all worked in there... really cool.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

@paulo - Thanks for getting to the end of the tune, and even liking it by the time you got there. Like you said, the fact that you got to the end of a tune so long is indeed a compliment.

I have to admit that I'm a "glass half empty" kind of person, but it does sometimes work as a bit of reverse psychology and tempts people to find out for themselves how bad something really is.

I've heard plenty of good things said about Omnisphere but I've not looked into it yet, mainly on account of having two other quite heavy weight synths like Absynth and Tassman. Add to that synths like Ultra Analog, Twin and Chromophone and I'm kinda getting all synth'd out. But you've got me interested again and I suppose one more synth may just kick something off in my head.

@Mark - Thanks for listening :-) I've just listened to a couple of your tunes at SoundCloud and it's not that different to what I've done so you can't be that far away. I've got a load of tunes from ten years ago that I'm not even going to bother uploading until I've done some serious remixing and mastering. I think we just develop, as composers and musicians over the years and I've been creating stuff for nigh on thirty lol. The tune I've uploaded and linked here seems to be hitting the spot but it's not always been like that.

Ah, that took me back.  Very TGish.  None of that is a slam, still one of my favorite styles of music.  Nice drive and the strings sound very authentic.  Nice and round.  Really like it.  And as said above, I listented to the whole piece.  Not often that happens w/ an 11+ min work.

AT, thanks for dropping by and for managing to get through the whole of that tune. I really do appreciate it.

I've popped over to your SoundCloud page so it is playing the four Rm101 tracks as I type (I'm a slow typist... not in a single finger way... just considering my words). The first track just didn't prepare me for the following three. Such a varied array of tunage and all kept me hooked to the last. Definitely not the norm. It's not placeable, except to say it is "alternative." I hate labelling music though, to be honest. Yes, I know some have a definite genre, but some times some music just does not.
Blimey, I'm waffling a bit there.
S'funny really, that most of the peeps that have commented here don't hit me as being into electronic music, so it just goes to show how wrong a person can be in his assumptions LOL. In fact, darned stupid of me to try and second guess what peeps listen to. While I compose trite electronic music, I'll more than likely be listening to Slipknot and Meshuggah.

I'm off before I prattle some more.
