Problem restarting Sonar

I'm having a problem running Sonar X2 Producer. It starts up fine each day. However, after shutting it down the first time, it will not restart. When I open the Task Manager, I see that "SONARPDR.exe" is one of the processes that is still running. If I shut it down in Task Manager, X2 will restart. My question is, is this a bug in the program, or is there a setting/plugin/driver/what-have-you that will cause this?

What do you have hooked up to your PC that is used in Sonar? An example would be any USB or Fire-wire hardware, like a MIDI controller. sometimes these things can cause Sonar to hang as the controller doesn't let go of it.

You using any M-Audio gear? Lots of complaints about this. Only solution seems to be what you are already doing (ending the process in the Task Manager).

Thanks CJ and Beepster.  No joy here.  I don't have any external hardware hooked up specifically for Sonar.  The only things I have are a wireless mouse/keyboard combo and a couple of flash drives that have no files or anything related to Sonar on them.

hmm... weird. Have you installed the quick fix? I'd also check to see if maybe there is a driver update for the keyboard/mouse as well as any other hardware. Is this a new computer? Cheers.

Oh, Dave!  I was hoping nobody was going to ask me that question and show that the emperor has no clothes .  I have only onboard sound   I used to have a nice computer with a quad-core CPU, not great but nice sound card, and a Raptor drive to make real fast, but it crapped out on me a couple of months ago, and I haven't had the money to replace it.  I had to buy a work computer, but I have gone as long as I can stand without Sonar, so I'm basically running it on a glorified electric typewriter

If you google sonarpdr.exe you will see that it's a well known issue. It seems to be related to soundcard drivers although i havent come across a definitive explanation.... maybe there isnt one!
I had a delta1010 and sometimes it would happen, and I now have an octa capture and it has happened but very rarely. Since win 8 was installed it hasn't happened at all. Could be coincidence!

Yeah... not to be "that guy" but you need an interface. It's likely the soundcard not letting go. You're just gonna have to use End Task for now. Really if that's the only issue you are having that's pretty minor as far as annoyances considering.

I'd still check for any fresh drivers for it and whatever else you got going on. Optimize the system for audio and find out what the preferred driver mode of the card is.

Also you might want to keep a wired mouse and keyboard handy. Those wireless set ups can cause stupidness as well with their drivers and whatnot. It's just an extra little thing to try out when troubleshooting.

    Cheers.

Sometimes you can't even end task no matter how many times you click it or however long you wait and as a result a reboot is the only option. Real pain in the proverbials!

I've had the same thing happen to me... can't even close it with the task manager. The first few times it happened I rebooted and that took care of that. Other times I just move on to something else and after a few minutes Sonar shuts down, verified with the task manager.

I usually jump in and defend users of integrated audio, and defy the conventional wisdom that you must have a professional interface to make serious music. But in this particular case it really is the sound card and its driver that's the source of your problem.

You might try running it in MME mode, which is not as efficient but can avoid some of these types of problems. If that doesn't work, google for an updated driver. If you're already up to date on the driver, your best bet is to acquire an inexpensive interface and disable the onboard sound.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Thanks all.  It may not be fixed, but at least I'm pretty sure of where the problem lies.

Here's my 2cents on X2. X1 rarely had a shut down issue. If it had a crash(rare) then you can go to task manager and close down sonar from there. Not so with X2. When you get a crash or a shut down with X2 and can not restart, going to task manager will not help. Sonar.exe appears to be cemented into task manage and OS restart is your only option. The sonar code monkeys have some serious work ahead of them.

Just a couple of things.  If I shut down from task manager, it seems to work, at least to the point of being able to re-start X2.

Moving sideways, is it possible to have no MIDI output devices defined under Preferences>MIDI>Devices?  The reason I'm asking is that, as I looked through different settings, I found that the only MIDI output device that I have listed is the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, which is checked.  I never use it, but it is checked anyway, so I tried to uncheck it.  The little eternal circle spins and spins until you give up and click in X2 somewhere and then it tells you that X2 is not responding.  Could this be what is not allowing X2 to shut down, or is having at least one MIDI instrument required?

I looked in my X2 devices and my GS synth was there but not checked. I checked it, applied the change... no problems. I unckecked it... no problems. I am unable to reproduce the problem you are having.

Okay.  Think I've got it beat.  I could not uncheck the Microsoft GS Wavetable.  X2 would hang and Windows would shut it down.  However, on a hunch I tried rebooting my machine and before doing anything else, I started X2 but did not open any projects.  I went straight to preferences and unchecked the GS Wavetable.  Voila!  It accepted the change, and now I can shut down and restart to my little heart's desire.

That also solved a problem I was having with recent files not showing up in the File drop-down menu.  I suppose because it wasn't shutting down properly, it wasn't remembering the most recent files.  It didn't help with my BReverb problem (different post) but hey, I'll take what I can get!  Thanks all!
