Keyboard stand ideas

So I guess you already looked at the boring zillion keyboard stands starting at $20 and up, adjustable for height, some come with add on racks, some are multi tiered and on and on, 

If your looking for different, build it out of wood! They look pretty cool, One band was called the " Trappers"  and they had one made out of logs with a pair of snowshoes nailed to the front. . 

Well, this is a delicate problem, indeed. There's not a whole lot of good stands for heavy keys for the standing people.

I've got the black version of the V-Stand (from Ultimate). I find it a bit more elegant than the silver coloured Roland one and as you know it's easy to fold and transport. There's a new Pro version out that has replaced the old one that look nice.

Then there's the original stand for Fantom-G8. It has three height positions but is a nightmare to fold up and down. If you can move it as it is it's quite good. The second tier is not that sturdy though.

One underrated stand from Roland is the KS-12. It also has got three height options but the highest of them is not all that high ... So it depends on your own height. Really fast to set up! Don't know if that is available in the US though.

Final one from Roland is the KS-J8. I like it a lot but it's really heavy and maybe not as elegant as you would like.

But that would not hold a V-Piano. That is a huge mother of a piano, I assure you.

For me the Apex-stands does not cut it 'cause:
* there is no room for pedals
* my knees will get over-bent 
* I always have trouble seeing the display of the lower keyboard

I've googled and searched everything I can imagine. I guess I'll build something out of wood and steel that will have a contemporary feel to it without being a behemoth. You'd think someone had a "designer line" of musical instrument stands like they do for studio desks. I guess there's not much of a market for that.

Be aware people V Piano weights 38 Kg. It is not for an ordinary stand unless you are prepared to have end up on the ground. If it wobbles on the stand you are in trouble.

Cinder blocks? 

I have a dual stand.... stacks 2 keyboards on top of each other.... it is rock solid. Wide base... and works OK for seated depending on the height of the seat, but the lower keyboard is easier to play seated.... but standing... works well on both upper and lower. 

Our keyboard player used this rig standing....of course, she was a short girl so it was the perfect height for her.

The supports are in an X pattern and there is a brace with notches which allow the X to be adjusted> I currently have it in the furthest position..... which is the lowest setting. Moving the catch to the notches further in result int he keyboards being raised up by a considerable amount if you go all the way in. 

The pic below shows it with 2 keyboards on it and unfortunately not much of the stand. 

Two adjustable X's front and back.... welded to a bar on each bottom side... the bar is about 3 feet long.... the X's have a bolt through them to allow the X to move...and the rear (audience side) X has the bar with the notches and a clamp to secure the X angle at the required height. 

With the big 3' bars on the floor, this thing is stable even at the higher settings. The red upper keyboard holder is removeable if only one keyboard is being used. 




I have since retired the upper keyboard.... it's behind the door in my daughter's bedroom, and have fashioned a platform from wood to hold my laptop in the position above the Yamaha below it....

I will post a pic or two tomorrow of what I came up with. Like I said earlier, it's based on the original stand that came with the V-Piano. I had to raise it, but most of all, keep it looking clean and a bit upscale. Until tomorrow,....

Under no circumstances use an ironing board as a keyboard stand. Synkrotron's suggestion is idiotic to say the least. The problem with the old ironing board situation is that the mechanism for keeping the stand upright is working pretty hard when a heavy weight is put on it and at some point it will give way and the whole thing will come crashing down. I have seen it!

SO, why not contact the V-Piano people, and see what THEY think would work well for your needs?
