Fed Up with UVERSE...
In an attempt to codify all our "technology" onto one single bill we did a total "UVERSE" package about this time last year from ATT. We have both cells, land line, internet and uverse tv all in one bundle. I have several niggles with all of the services but in the last month or so I'm about to go postal with my internet download speeds. I'm supposed to be getting 6 mbps. And I do occasionally get up to 5.3 mbs...for maybe 20 or 30 seconds...randomly...followed by extended periods of speeds as low as 0.14...yes ZERO POINT FOURTEEN mbs!! I didn't really realize this had been happening so long as we'd been traveling over thanksgiving. But I've been taking advantage of many of the end of year sales folks are having and in the last week have been trying to download my various "gigabytes" of purchases. No go. I've had to resort to downloading them on my office computer and bringing them home on a USB stick. It's so bad that now I can't watch YouTube videos on the studio computer. Luckily I'm on a 1 year contract with ATT and can move my services. Looks like I'll be visiting the ATT store over the holidays to give them a little xmas "cheer". Sheesh.

Cable internet was once thought of as "throughput sharing" with the people in your "vicinity". Sounds like that may be happening.

Our provider has been down 3 times the last 2 weeks. Their big spiel is 100% unlimited, full throttle speeds (I have a 3Mbps connection) with 5MB (Megabyte) bursts on up to 5 devices at a time. In other words, I could be downloading a 10GB file on my DAW, watching a HiDef streaming movie via my PS3 from Amazon, and talking on the phone (Vonage) with plenty of bandwidth to spare. So far they've lived up to that, but I've never heard of anyone doing that and I fear it's only a matter of time before they change their policy. I stream music from Pandora and Youtube all day long, then the wife and I watch movies on Amazon Prime at night. I have to be going through 50GB a day, easy. I have my home phone and TV through the internet now and it really sucks when they are down ... I lose all communication. What's funny is (shhhh, don't tell the wife) ... the 3G connection on my phone is lightning fast. So I'm never without access one way or another. Did they intentionally throttle you down because you used it too much and violated their FUP? The FUP (Fair Use Policy) is that nasty little thing you agree to that's hidden in the fine print when you sign up for their service. Yeah, you can have a 6Mbps connection, but you can only use 5GB a month. They pulled that crap with my Virgin Mobile MiFi wireless access card. Promised unlimited, but they throttled you down if you hit 5GB to a basically unusable speed.

Sheesh... My cable internet hasn't been down since 3:30am today! (It was down, supposedly for "maintenance," for half-an-hour - most of which I spent on the phone with them trying to find out what's going on! Remember I was working on a website all night and WANTED my internet up...)

Hey, ol'Pal. You might want to try this. Open your command screen, and run this line: PING [your provider] -n 100. In my case, that wound be PING charter.com -n 100 If the result is significantly greater that 0%, there is probably a system issue, and ATT needs to check into it. I use this test a lot when my customers have slow speeds and an otherwise good signal.

RobertB If the result is significantly greater that 0%, there is probably a system issue However, I don't understand this part since the above command returns MS and TTL... Where is this percentage coming from?

I hate AT&T, I really do...but I got that good 'ole GRANDFATHERED UNLIMITED DATA so I ain't going nowhere! I know, I know...pathetic.... I've been using smartphones with internet access for a good 5 or 6 years now. And I have had it up to here with AT&T's connectivity. You'd think somewhere like Manhattan would be a good network right? After all they have millions of paying customers many of whom rely on good data connectivity to run their businesses or do their jobs. Well there are still huge areas of the city where I can't download any data at all (even though my phone says it's connected and I have a good signal). And in the areas where I can, I'll load one page successfully then it'll just randomly decide to stop loading any more pages, and I have to disable the connection and connect again for it to work. I'm continually shouting at my phone in critical situations. Is there really any such thing as a good internet provider? I've had Time Warner Cable broadband for years and the download speeds are always up and down. Usually down. I've lost count of the number of times they've sent a technician round who says "yeah it's your modem...faulty modem...let me change that for you" and then within a week the problem's back. Are you going through a router? Sometimes that can be the problem. A lot of people have malfunctioning routers, or routers that aren't set up properly, and they don't even know it.
