The End of My PC

I Am getting dressed(great advice Bapu!) and going to Walmart and buying the Windows 7 upgrade. I wouldn't normally but I can't be sure of my Sonar to operate properly without it. Since I did wake up this morning and everything is as it was last night I see this as a good sign! So off I go to get the upgrade. Sure, I Am afraid. Very afraid! I hear voices and see things......well that's another story...anyway wish me luck!

Or if you're not in a hurry, getting it online might save the tax as well as have free shipping.

I've gotten a lot of stuff from NewEgg.com and it's going for $139 (Win 7 Pro).

Amzon is also another good place to get a good deals.

You're most welcome Bill!!

I'll be following you with this pretty soon too as I also will be building a new system with Win 7 Pro.

I have had no issues with my W7-Pro machine at all ... however, I am not doing any music in it as yet.

I will be putting together another machine and this one is to become the VST/Software machine that runs the Midi Keyboard, and the biggest reason why I delayed was that M-Audio's support and forums, have not been forward and clear with their drivers, and I was not sure that the Sound Card (1010LT) can function when it's all "software" ... so I left it alone a bit longer on the XP-Pro SP3 machine.

All in all, these versions have less need to check things and spam the internet connection on your network, or home machine, and this is one small part that eats up resources that you don't see! Apple, btw, is the worst at this, btw! Every time you play a song or do something musically related, iTunes immediately alerts its servers.

All in all, my recomendation is to always use the "Pro" versions ... why? ... they are not commercially bound, like the home use versions why, and they have a lot less installed crap for you to remove. In fact, in both XP-Pro and W7-Pro, I never had to remove anything ... except Norton in the first machine. I stick with F-Secure after having done support with them, and for them, and they are the best at handling issues and helping!

I will be doing W8, on one of my machines, that does not have anything in it, other than World of Warcraft, when I'm bored with the Coffee House!

I know at some point I will probably upgrade from XP pro.... which is running just fine....

My philosophy for this DAW has been... if it ain't broke, and it runs great, don't try to fix it or upgrade it....

but the thought of that day arriving when I am forced to upgrade just sends shivers up and down me spine.

The main concern I have is that with XP-PRO the HARFWARE is handled by the DAW or program that you have, and Windows does not deal with it, and tends to stand aside ... so to speak.

W8 and parts of W7, do NOT allow any software to talk to the hardware, directly, which could be an issue with many drivers, and this has been an issue as M-Audio, at least, has been very slow to update their drivers, and this will eventually mean that a whole bunch of their hardware will be redundant and worthless ... if they do not get it on.

In the end, I'm glad ... this control needs to get on to the SOFTWARE and the person's hands, because the hardware architecture of the computer has been a bad design that programmers have been going around a lot for 20 years, and it would be nice to deal with the sound in a much more direct way ... 3 or 4 or 5 inputs, to a virtual mixer, and one out, or two ... simple, and no hardware needed! Sort of like 3 or 4 programs running at the same time ... it's basically "virtualized".

But it will not happen on "specialty" machines for music and graphics right away, I do not think.

The real smart thing to do is to have someone invent a MIXER-SOUND card ... with 4 or 5 inputs and then all you do is PLUG and PLAY! ..... very simple and the hassles are basicallyover. In many ways, APPLE has already done a bit of this, but still too much crap in between that lowers the quality of the sound.

The one thing I'm worried about are the drivers when I upgrade to Windows 7. I ran the compatibility program and it's says all will be fine but will my Edirol FA-66 work? I know there will be problems

I would check in their website ... but again, I think that a lot of software is a bit behind the times right now, and mostly because the hardware side of things is so unsettled at the moment.

The advent of the handheld stuff was great ... it's all SOFTWARE in there, since there is no room for hardware, and this was Windows' biggest hair-raising problem, because they needed this and that and this and that ... and all of a sudden, they have to float without all that! And you already know that is the future of ALL software.

Hardware related stuff, like that one, or my sound card, and others, I think will have the hardest time, mostly because Microsoft does not have the time, the inclination, or the desire to help anyone else get their thing working ... and stifle everyone else at the same time.

And I doubt, at this time, that Edirol, M-Audio and others, have programmers that are up to date with W7 and W8 ... to make sure their products work correctly ... otherwise they would ALREADY have addressed and handled it ... which tells you ... that's another company waiting to die.

Too many of those computer peripheral companies are ... on their last gasp ... when you see AMD/ATI filing for bankrupcy ... you know that when they bought the video card, they were hoping they could save the other side of the business! Didn't happen!

The video card thing and its limitations will likely be falling apart faster than the music stuff, I bet ... since music is more exclusive than gaming is ... as many gaming folks take on the handheld devices which will provide more gamers than the internet versions of many games. In some ways, the shoot'em up games are perfect for your commute, a lot more than more comprehensive games than Warcraft and such! But you alreayd know that graphics have to get simpler and with less hardware!

I have found that W7 is more resistant to malware and other bad stuff. That also could be because Comcast switched from McAfee to Norton 360 but I think W7 is just a much better and safer OS all the way around... it just works. It is faster than XP... and I really liked XP but I had to do a LOT more work keeping everything running right with XP. I realize a lot of that was my own fault but still, IMO, W7 is more secure and stable that XP... maybe W8 is even better, I really have not heard anything but good about W8 (excepting those who do not like metro and that can easily be bypassed I think). Bottom line, I think W7 is head and shoulders better than XP but W8 probably only slightly better than W7 but YMMV.
