Why is the 45's hole . . .
why is a 45's hole bigger than the standard 12 inch record? I really don't know why.

drumstixkev why is a 45's hole bigger than the standard 12 inch record? I really don't know why. It was not originally ... but later it became so with the bigger and better turntables, that supposedly had better control of the smaller disk as it fit a bit more snug into the platter. There used to be in every record store the little plastic pieces you could put in the middle of the 45 so it was playable on regular turntables. Most radio statios (at least KTYD) had a separate turntable for 45's, but then to my knowledge they used 45's as shoeshine and stepping stones and ... I might add ... occasional tp!

mike_mccue here's why the 45 singles' hole is the 45 single hole size That's a really nice article, btw ... and very historical ... and you can even get more and other ideas by watching Tom Dowd's DVD, who used to cut the disks directly into the platter, or master ... right after WW2 ... and his history of music in America all the way to the late 60's is second to none. In many ways, it is more important than George Martin's. Sadly, Tom will never get the credit he deserves ... for the unbelievable historical document that shows more about music in the 50's and 60's in America than anything else ... but something that most people are still way too segregated and not appreciative of. I can easily say, however, that in music TODAY, at the very least, is the one place where ... most folks do not give a darn about anyone's color ... all that matters ... is ... play man ... play! But it was not like that for a long time!

I remember sticking this in the hole! A 45rpm adapter that allowed you to drop your 45's. Most of the time it didn't work.

mike_mccue I think it was John who kept the functioning hole in his pocket. btw Mike, not sure if it was coincidence or an omen but your post was number nine.

My player had one of those too (for any 45 that I didn't already have a center plug in). One thing I can't remember though, what size hole did the 78's have? The same as 45's? Or? I still remember turning songs into the Chipmunks by playing them using the 78 setting on my turntable when I was young...
