spdif to analogue converter
Can anyone recommend an spdif to analogue converter, I want to use the spdif o/p on my Roland QuadCapture to send an analogue signal to the mic in on my V-Synth GT for the vocoder.

Why not use the audio Out on the Quad?

I have seen cheap ones on e-bay for 18 US Dollars. It is a small box with a optical and RCA SPDIF port on one side and two analog RCA outputs on the other side. Do a search for "spdif to audio converter".

Yes, there are quite a few little boxes that do the trick. If you google for spdif and analog instead of spdif and audio, you get a slightly different variety. I also have an older audio interface that works as a standalone converter. If mic is the only input you can use, you may need a DI box and/or pad as the RCA output level may be too high for the mic input and the input impedance too low for the RCA output. Make sure that you turn off the phantom power of the mic input. Wilko

As a QUAD-CAPTURE owner I would be interested to see the answer to Mr Jones' question. Also, have you not considered using a soft synth vocoder? I've got a Novation Nova which comes with a great vocoder, but I honestly can't be bothered setting it up. I've recently purchased Vocodex by Image Line and it works a treat and keeps everything "in the box."

I don't see the point in adding 2 stages of AD - DA and incurring additional cost/connection variables in order to go from analog to analog

What is your point of saying you don't see the point? Do you suspect that the OP has some unused analog send that hasn't been considered for use with a discrete send to the vocoder trigger? best regards, mike

I agree Jonesey, I can only assume that the OP has used the two analogue outputs on the QUAD-CATPURE for some other, simultaneous task? I await the OP's response with baited breath...

mike_mccue Do you suspect that the OP has some unused analog send that hasn't been considered for use with a discrete send to the vocoder trigger? Hi Mike, the QUAD-CAPTURE comes with a left/right analogue out as well as the digital coaxial output.

Don't forget the ability to mix the hardware inputs back in with the playback on the headphone output. Just so it's clear, my point is that the OP has a plan to achieve a goal... I'm assuming it's the best immediate option for him. If you have a mixer and some cables, maybe a Y-cord, there's a bunch of other ways to do it too... but I figure the OP wouldn't be asking about using the spdif if there were other immediate options. I don't have any knowledge of the little spdif boxes... so I just came by to read. The first thing I imagined is that the OP is using the analog outputs for monitoring while overdubbing... so they are already in use and he needs another discrete send to trigger a hardware vocoder. Duh! It seems discouraging to see someone discourage someone from using the 2nd pair of outputs on the QUAD capture. I thought maybe someone might be wanting to make a point of suggesting monitoring with a hardware mixer and using it to split the signals. It might be an option. best regards, mike

Something you seem to lack in generally

OP was "online" earlier but hasn't dropped by to elaborate, so perhaps we will never know.

Maybe it's because post #4 was an actual answer to the OP question. Post #3 and #4 both seemed helpful and informative. What more is there to discuss? best regards, mike

It's nice to know when a question has been answered, would you not agree?

I usually consider how courteous the question seems before I choose to acknowledge and/or answer it. I don't think that every question can expect to be answered. Thanks for asking so politely. :-) best regards, mike

Oops, I totally forgot this thread...my apologies. I ended up getting a Lindy dig>analogue converter and plugged it into the coax out 3/4 of the quad capture. Since out 1L/2R also go to the phones out I didn't want to use those. Thanks for the entertaining thread in my absence! ^^
