Recording one instrument...........

Ok this is so basic but Im just getting my hands back into my X1 studio after a long layoff. I want to record a guitar track while several midi tracks are playing...........but I dont want all the midi tracks recorded on the same channel (or not at all) where the guitar will be recorded. I.e. I need playback without havimng EVERYTHING recorded. I know its a routing problem but cant for the life of me remember what needs to be done. Help???

What needs to be done depends on what you have done this far. It's the default, normal way that the other tracks do not get recorded. So you have a setting somewhere that gets them recorded. You should give your system specs in order to make answering possible.

My guess is you have a SoundBlaster soundcard, or you use the the integrated soundchip, with "Stereo Mix" or "What U hear" setting enabled.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

Bottom line is you can't send the playback back to the record input. If you're using an external mixer, that means you need to have a separate bus (the Mackie and Behringer ALT3/4 bus works great for this). If you're not using an external mixer, then check the M-Audio Control Panel routing settings. You'll need to use headphones for the playback if you're using a mic or you'll get feedback.

Im kinda lost on what your asking and what was initially posted.

Are your midi tracks their own seperate tracks in Sonar and an Audio Track for the Guitar

or is everything external being sent into Sonar on the same track?

Theres a mess of ways to do it,

Id probably just Mute the MIDI tracks when exporting and watch what you select on the Export screen so the mutes will be in effect

It should be as simple as inserting an audio track, set the input channel, arm the track for recording and hit 'R'

If this isn't working for you, we'll need to know the exact details of what you are doing

What Bristol_J said... it should be a lot easier than you're making it sound. There is no reason for your midi/softsynth tracks to re-record to your new audio track unless their output is set to your new audio track's input...
