Tony Greig dies.

Details HERE.

A larger than life character for sure, he'll probably be remembered by most as Kerry Packer's 'inside' man in the events leading up to World Series cricket.

I think those of us with a slightly longer memory are, to this day, still embarrassed by his "I intend to make them grovel" proclamation before the 1976 home series against the West Indies. Even in a time before political correctness, the connotation of a white South African directing such language at a team of black and Asian players still sits a little uncomfortably.

Maybe one would playfully like to imagine Mr Grieg being welcomed at the Pearly Gates by Malcolm Marshall inviting him to pad up...

I seem to remember Greig as a 'big occasion' player - yes, 'larger than life' is about right.

The only (non-insect) cricket I've ever seen or played involves darts...  Oh well!

He was the enemy to me being a youngster from Kent and him being Sussex and all.  I remember watching him in the outfield at the Nevill Ground I think it must have been, when I was about 7 and thinking he must have been a 'real' giant whilst rolling the ball back to him after Knotty had hit yet another boundary.  So yep larger than life in every respect.

    RIP
