Mix Help!! No Cohesion

Hey,  Just working on a song with the band and I'm having a hard time getting the mix to come together. Not sure if I should ask for help in another forum but I'm sure someone will have a couple of hints. Recorded on Zoom R16 and transfered to Sonar PE 6. I can't seem to get things to sit in the mix properly and if anyone has any suggestions I'd be happy to hear them. I'm not liking my vox, snare, and bass in particular. Just working on a premix before dropping down "non'scratch" lead guitars.
Thanks and have a great new year everyone.   It's called "august slide for greg"  https://soundcloud.com/search?q=picklebunker

How are you eqing everything? The snare sounds a bit cardboard-ish. I've found that sometimes when something doesn't sit, it's because there is too much 250hz(or around that area). I'd listen around there and try to cut some of that out. I'd also try cutting somewhere around 400hz to remove that cardboard sound. That might help it fit better. The bass isn't too bad IMO, but it seems a little to loud. Bring it down a db or so and use a hpf around 70hz to 100hz if you haven't already. You could scoop out the mids around 300hz or so to make room for the guitars if you want too. Anyway basically try to use your eq and your ear to cut frequencies to make room for the different instruments. After that you could try some compression and/or a very slight amount of reverb to make everything come together.

If the snare sounds too loud for your tastes, turn it down.

The bass could come down a little, but not much.  As is in the first section, it works.  I'd est. it and then pull it down.  It sounds fine once the rest of the songs gets louder.

The guitars ain't jelling?  Send them through a guitar bus if you aren't already and slap the ssl bus comp on them.  That will help est. the overall relative vol of the guitars and let the compressor push one to the forefront as they self mix.

I didnt' really listen to the vox critically, but what I heard was a good but not great performance.  Nothing really stood out, good or bad.  If you are happy w/ the take, all the usuall things apply.  HP the bottom.  On vox I'll often go up to the 200 hZ since the low end of the voice often fights w/ the bass/kick/flr tom and doesn't add anything.

    Thanks,

All is understood and should help out. One question for AT - what is the SSL Bus comp? I'm assuming this is a bus compressor but does it come with Sonar PE 6?

pickle, nope.  It came in for X1.  But you should be able to use the Sonitus comp.  I'm not sure of all the presets to start - probably the neve.  Adjust to taste.

AT - Thanks. As a matter of fact, while I was looking for it in my FX bin I discoved the Sonitus, which I've never used. I did start with one of the presets, not sure if it was the Neve, but I think it's starting to tighten up a bit. I appreciate the advice.
