Staff/Notation
I don't know how to use cakewalk sound center without a MIDI cable or MIDI piano. I would just be using my mouse to get sound out of it. Also, can someone give me instructions on how to use cakewalk sound center without the physical piano? Thank you SO much. One more thing, could someone help me figure out how to use the Staff View (or piano roll thing) in Music Creator 6? Thank you thank you thank you! I've been confused for days... With much appreciation, alehrakjesdsfkfn

Welcome to the forum. I'll answer here since your other post is the same question. This is a user forum, not Cakewalk support, so there isn't someone here 24 hours a day to answer questions; sometimes you have to wait awhile for a reply. Without a MIDI keyboard or controller, you have to enter the notes one by one in either the Staff view or Piano Roll view (PRV), as you know. To use SoundCenter, you click Insert at the top and select your synth from the list. If you already have a MIDI track, you can uncheck the Create MIDI Source track box. If you're starting from scratch, leave that box checked and MC will insert a MIDI track with the output already set to the synth and it will insert the synth. Set the synth's output to a bus (preferred) or your sound card. In the SC GUI (the window that should pop up with the synth's properties), select your instrument and the specific patch you want to try. Now click on the MIDI track and go to Views and choose either Staff or PRV. Select a note resolution in the box at the top and the Draw tool, then start clicking notes into the PRV or staff. You should hear the notes play as you click them in. There is more info in the Help files and there are tons of videos on the internet covering this subject. Many are for Cakewalk's X1 and X2 programs, but the method of selecting synths, and entering notes should be identical. Good luck!

Does anyone ever have trouble entering the notes in the staff view? No matter what note value I choose, the notes that are written are quarter notes. I can't figure out how to change the note values when I'm actually writing notes. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, or if there is a glitch in the software. There is nothing about thins that I can find in the help files. Thanks.

Reece.... I see no links. Connie R..... you can change the note values. I do not recall and am not on the DAW right now..... but on the tool bar, there is a way to change to whole, eighth, 16ths and others. Use the HELP menu.... that's what it's there for. Aleh.... we need more info about the computer, the operating system, and the sound card to be able to help you. The reason you can not hear the notes may very depend on the equipment you have.

I could be wrong. but usually they do it just like this and then after 2 or 3 posts they'll have a link to Notes Helper. and I think the ORIGINAL poster up there is legitimate. just not sure about ConnieR

that sounds like a common issue to new folks to MC6 to me as well.... in MC6 and X1 the place you change the note values for staff is not as obvious as it was in the former versions.

I just helped a guy in another thread with Cakewalk Sound Center where the volume of that SIMPLE INSTRUMENT track would go to -INF (no volume). we had to switch to using MIDI/OUTPUT tracks instead of the SIMPLE INSTRUMENT track. this seems to be a bug. I did not report it yet.
