Audio interface question about USB 3.0 (conflicts and windows conflicts-Just 2
Hi Looking at The MOTU UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid Audio Interface: Have read it does not like USB 3.0 ports and also that the Windows drivers are not real great? Looking at the Roalnd Octa, really my first choice: Read it definitely does not like USB 3.0 ports. It's for my laptop which of course only has 4 USB 3.0 ports. Killer laptop besides that. Yes, I do need that many ins and outs. At least 6 in and 6 or 8 out. Thanks folks

What is the laptop model? Does it have any expansion slots? I know when I tried my quad capture on usb3 the latency was much higher than usb2

Its an Asus N56VM. 4 USB ports. It has on HDMI and of course ethernet-That's it. What is an expansion port? If you mean like a card slot or something-no, I sure wish it did because I also have an Echo Indigo. So, it seems the USB 3.0 ports thing is not just a rumor. Thanks very Much

I believe that Windows 8 has addressed the USB 3 problem. I know that Propellerhead's Balance now works with USB 3 in Windows 8 when it didn't in Windows 7. Grum.

I use the Motu Mk3 Hybrid fro mixing project in Win 64bit and they are rock solid. I believe that they use the same drivers as the Ultralite hybrid. I also believe that Win 7 does not support USB3 speeds on its own.

Yes, I do need that many ins and outs. At least 6 in and 6 or 8 out. The issue with USB-3 is that on all motherboards except the newer Z series chipset units, the USB-3 ports are provided via 3rd-party add-on controllers. Liken this USB-3 scenario to using non-TI chipset Firewire controllers. Many USB-2 audio interfaces don't cope well (or as well) as using the USB-2 controller that integrated into the motherboard's chipset. With a laptop, you have limited USB ports... but with a desktop, you should have plenty of integrated USB-2 ports. There's no performance advantage to using a USB-2 device connected to a USB-3 port. I've been running USB-3 RAID units under Win7x64. You don't need any special patch/drivers/updates/etc to get the full speed of USB-3. USB-3 will top out in the ~500MB/Sec range (assuming you're connected to a USB-3 controller on a Z series chipset motherboard - integrated into the chipset). The MOTU USB audio interface drivers are fine. If you're using a Z series chipset motherboard (Z77, Z75), you'll likely do fine when connected via USB-3 ports.

Thanks Guys The MOTU UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid would be for my laptop which only has USB 3.0 ports. That's where I would want to use it. It has that built extra charge usb crap so I assuming this affects the voltage. Maybe not. But the voltage is diffeent from what I read. I am getting the Asus P8Z77 V for my desktop daw. I use my layla3G for that. I am looking at the USB stuff for my laptop only-Asus N56VM Thanks for all the responses.

Can't believe I have to register to download drivers at MOTU? Anyway, I cannot tell if they ar the same drivers for the 828 that Cjay uses. But I did see where they are testing drivers for Windows 8 x64 and will have those soon.

I am happy to report that the drivers are the same for all the MOTU USB audio interfaces and CJay says they are rock solid- Cool Good enough for me. Also they have firmware updates for ALL the USB interfaces to make them more compatible with USB 3.0 ports-That's a big plus also. No mention of that on the Roalnd site for the Octacapture. Just read where some bozo says (Dec 12, 2012 no less ) that the Win USB drivers suffer a lot???? But that's only one post.

I use USB Strat. I find it way better. But this also depends on the type of Firewire card you have on your PC. From what i have read, firewire is going to be fazed out in the future. Cj

I use a quad capture on an hp laptop thru a usb 3.0 port - asio, 96 samples, no problems. If I'm pushing it I turn off wireless. On my DAW I use firewire (audiofire4) - it's running asio, 96 samples as well, but no wireless.

I really am torn between the roland and the MOTU-I need, well want, the many i\o' so I am pulling my hair out between the OCtacapture and the MOTU Ultralite HYbrid MK3. The MOTU is $100+ cheaper and reads much better than the Octacapture. I mean feature wise. Both read nice that way actually. But the USB 3.0 ports on my Asus N56VM scare me with the Roland. I need to sstop reading reviews :-) MOTU actually has a FW upgrade for all it;s USB units to make them more compatable with Windows USB 3.0 ports Roland seems to not care. What a surprise. I wouldlike to have something for the weekend so I have until tomorrow morning to order. I use Amazon-the return policy alone makes it worth it plus I have the prime shipping $399 one day service. That's on either unit. The only reason I don't just jump on the MOTU is because MOTU just seems more Mac oriented to me-dumb I know. Helllllppppppppp mmmmmeeeeeee :-)
