I tried.

I read it 3 times and I have no idea what you are saying.

What I can say is that you lost me at the supposition that I was advocating a dichotomy of "Recorded vs. Live Performance."

I believe there are examples a great performances that have been recorded and that there are experiences of great performances that have not been recorded.

I believe that if you enjoy inspired performance that it may override, without obviating, an appreciation for structure, arrangement, or genre.

I enjoy inspired performances and I enjoy them regardless of whether they are experienced live first hand or through a recording.

I really can't follow the rest... it appears you may be taking the liberty of speaking for me with loose inferences and then debating the premise using examples of composing with implicit intent.

I'm not following it.

all the best,
mike

I meant in the sense that:

Someone who does a midi-mockup vs. the orchestra who plays the material. I didn't say the orchestra who was recorded while playing it.

Perhaps, you haven't heard mockups before, but even they get only so close to the real deal. If a live orchestra is actually recorded, what else are they doing to sound like (unless the production was bad)?

My mind has been elsewhere, so forgive all my ramblings, everyone!
